Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast: compare six practical bases
Amalfi is the simplest first coast base; Positano suits time in Positano itself, Ravello suits hilltop evenings, and Maiori or Minori suit an eastern-coast stay.
The best base for a first Amalfi Coast stay
Choose central Amalfi for a first stay focused on several coast towns without a car. Its waterfront combines boat access and road connections, including the bus to Ravello. That is a logistics recommendation, not a claim that Amalfi has the cheapest rooms or that every property is easy to reach. Choose Positano when being in Positano each evening is the main reason for the trip. Choose Ravello for the hilltop setting and gardens rather than repeated beach visits. Maiori and Minori deserve comparison when you want an eastern-coast base with beach time and less emphasis on travelling to Positano daily.

| Compare | Choose it for | Accept this trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Amalfi | First-time coast exploration and Ravello outings | Busy waterfront; inland and hillside properties can add steps |
| Atrani | A smaller town immediately beside the Amalfi area | Extra final approach; no October 2026 Travelmar stop |
| Positano | Positano beaches, lanes and evenings | Steep walking and road-to-waterfront height differences |
| Ravello | Gardens and evenings in the hilltop centre | Road connection to coast boats and beach towns |
| Maiori | Main-beach time and eastern-coast outings | Longer journey if most plans are west towards Positano |
| Minori | A smaller seafront town and Roman-villa interest | Some Positano ferry journeys require a change in Amalfi |
Amalfi: distinguish waterfront, centre and hillside addresses
A room near the waterfront or the lower central lanes is the practical default for repeated boat and bus outings. Follow the actual walk from the quay to the entrance before comparing two accommodation pins. A property farther inland or above town can change the luggage arrival substantially. For a four-night stay, central Amalfi lets you devote separate days to Ravello, Positano and the local town area while returning to the same room. It is less compelling if you mainly want a pool and will arrange private transfers, or if you want every dinner to be in Positano.

Atrani suits a traveller who wants a smaller town while remaining near Amalfi. Look at the exact pedestrian approach and steps between the arrival point and the property; the town’s proximity does not make every room convenient with luggage or a buggy. For October 2026, organise a ferry arrival through an operating nearby port rather than an assumed Atrani stop. Travelmar’s current timetable labels Atrani service “from June 2027”. A future network announcement does not solve this season’s arrival.

A lower-town stay works for waterfront time and ferry arrivals, provided the specific building approach suits you. An upper-road or Chiesa Nuova address can be better for a road arrival but means more vertical travel to the beach. Sponda and Chiesa Nuova are different rows in SITA’s timetable; neither label means the ferry quay. Fornillo is worth considering if that beach and the western side of town are where you want to spend time. Ask for the complete street-to-room route and any porter arrangement before paying for a view. A hotel lift only describes part of the journey in a town of stairways.

Around Piazza del Vescovado you can organise time at Villa Rufolo and walk onwards towards Villa Cimbrone’s gardens. Staying overnight makes sense if you want dinner and time in the hilltop centre after a day visit would have ended. Ravello has a coastal hamlet at Castiglione, but that does not place the hilltop hotel district beside a ferry. Repeated Amalfi departures need a road connection or a demanding walk. For reduced mobility, inspect both the property and the daily route to the places you want to see; do not assume a hilltop garden visit is step-free.

Start with Maiori’s main waterfront if a substantial beach is the priority. Its other coves have different access: the tourism authority describes a stair descent at Salicerchie and a landslide-related restriction at Cavallo Morto. “Maiori beach hotel” is not enough to identify the beach or the approach. Minori suits a smaller-town stay with time for the seafront and Roman-villa interest. Travelmar’s October timetable shows both towns linked with Amalfi; several Positano connections require a boat change in Amalfi. Choose either for what you will do locally, not on the assumption that every coast journey is direct.

Sorrento works better for repeated Pompeii or Herculaneum rail outings. Salerno works as a transport-edge base when mainline arrivals and departures matter more than sleeping in a small coast town. Staying in either means travelling into the coast rather than already being at the beach or square you came to see. Compare the full cost: the room quote, breakfast, parking if needed, and the journeys you repeat. Travelmar’s published ordinary return between Salerno and Amalfi is €24 per adult before applicable extras. A lower room quote can lose its advantage if every day begins and ends with another paid crossing.

For a buggy or limited walking range, compare a specific lower-town property with a verified route to meals and transport. Neither a town-level recommendation nor an accessible-room label proves that the streets, beach and boat boarding are accessible. Ask for steps, gradients and the actual entrance rather than only the distance. With a car, obtain confirmed parking and arrival instructions before booking. A central hotel can still require off-site parking or a porter; a hillside property can depend on a vehicle for dinner. Do not use a map pin as permission to drive to a doorway. No parking rate or room-price advantage is assumed here.
