Naples travel guide: city sights, bases and Pompeii day trips

Allow two full days for Naples itself, or three with Pompeii. Walk the historic centre, choose a museum around current gallery closures and stay near the transport you will actually use.

How many days do you need in Naples?

Two full days is a useful first-visit allocation: one for the historic centre and one for MANN and the royal-city waterfront. Add a third full day for Pompeii rather than fitting it between a train arrival and an evening departure. These are suggested pacing choices, not minimum entry requirements. For a single day, follow the historic-centre walk below and choose one paid interior. With four days, keep the extra day for another regional outing or a slower city day; a second hotel change is not necessary just to visit Pompeii.

Walk the historic centre from Gesù Nuovo to the Duomo

Start at Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and Santa Chiara, then follow the Spaccanapoli corridor towards San Domenico Maggiore. Turn into Via San Gregorio Armeno for the nativity-workshop streets and continue towards Via dei Tribunali and the Duomo. This groups the old-centre sights into one walk rather than repeated trips across the city. Choose Santa Chiara’s cloister or the Sansevero Chapel as your main interior, not a string of hurried ticketed stops. Sansevero contains the Veiled Christ; the Duomo and the separate Treasury museum are different visits. Leave time for lunch in the centre before adding another museum.

MANN: plan for the galleries that are open

The National Archaeological Museum is a useful companion to Pompeii, but do not book specifically for the Alexander Mosaic or Secret Cabinet on an autumn 2026 trip. The detailed gallery schedule lists the Mosaic collection and Secret Cabinet as closed for refurbishment from 21 September to 30 November 2026; the general visitor notice says until further notice. Treat reopening as unconfirmed until the museum updates its notice. Farnese sculpture, frescoes, objects of daily life from the Vesuvian area and the Pompeii model offer a different reason to visit. Allow roughly two to three hours as an editorial planning estimate. Some other sections operate restricted or rotating hours, so choose a session from the current gallery schedule rather than assuming every collection is open.

Fit MANN around its Tuesday closure

Normal museum hours are 09:00–19:30, last entry 18:30; staff begin clearing galleries at 19:00. General adult admission is €20. Tuesday is the normal closing day, with holiday exceptions. In December 2026 the museum lists opening on Tuesday 8 December and closure on Wednesday 9 December. Use the historic-centre walk or Pompeii for a normal Tuesday and move MANN to another day. On 5 November 2026 a staff assembly from 13:00 to 15:00 may reduce gallery access, so a morning visit is the simpler choice if that date is fixed.

Via Toledo, Piazza del Plebiscito and the waterfront

Use a separate half-day for Via Toledo, Galleria Umberto I and Piazza del Plebiscito. The Royal Palace and San Carlo Theatre are here, while Castel Nuovo is closer to Municipio and the port. Continue towards Santa Lucia and the Lungomare for a waterfront walk instead of returning through the same old-centre lanes. Choose this side of the city for the second afternoon if you want time outside rather than another large museum. Vomero is a hilltop alternative, not a short extension of the waterfront walk: use public transport and allow for the climb between the station and your destination.

Choose your Naples base by the next journey

Toledo or Municipio is a useful first-visit compromise between the old centre, royal-city sights and the port. Stay in the historic centre if most of your time will be spent walking its lanes. Choose Centrale/Garibaldi for repeated rail trips or a one-night stop, and Chiaia or Santa Lucia for a waterfront-oriented stay. The exact street, room position and building entrance matter more than the district label. Our area comparison explains the arrival, walking and noise trade-offs without pretending that one neighbourhood suits every visit.

Arrive by train or Alibus

For the city centre, book a mainline train to Napoli Centrale rather than assuming Napoli Afragola is the same arrival. Follow signs within the Centrale complex for Garibaldi metro or the separate EAV platforms as needed. Metro Line 1 connects Garibaldi with the centre and Municipio; a line on the map is not proof that every station lift is working. From the airport, ANM’s Alibus serves Piazza Garibaldi and the port, including the Beverello/Stazione Marittima area. The single-ride Alibus ticket is €5. ANM also lists a separate €5 integrated Unico Alibus ticket valid for 90 minutes; do not assume the single-ride product includes a subsequent metro journey. Road traffic can lengthen the airport transfer.

Make Pompeii a full day, with the right station

For Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra, use the Napoli–Sorrento Circumvesuviana route and Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. The national-rail station called Pompei is elsewhere in the modern town; it is not an interchangeable stop at the same entrance. For a first visit, choose between the ancient-city-only ticket and the option including suburban villas before buying. Starting early is especially useful in winter, when the archaeological park closes at 17:00.

30 October 2026: change the Pompeii plan if possible

EAV has announced a 24-hour strike affecting Vesuvian rail and bus services on 30 October 2026, with guaranteed service windows 05:30–08:30 and 16:30–19:30. Runs outside those windows depend on participation; the normal timetable is not a promise that your chosen train will run. If dates are flexible, move Pompeii to another day. If they are fixed, use EAV’s published guaranteed-departure list for both directions and allow for the park’s winter closing time. Do not assume a replacement public bus is exempt from the same strike.

Connect Naples to Rome without a car

The Rome–Naples high-speed corridor makes Naples a practical next base after Rome. Compare the actual booked service, departure station and fare conditions, then leave time at Centrale for the onward city transfer rather than treating the rail journey as hotel-to-hotel time.
