Florence travel guide: sights, neighbourhoods and rail arrivals
Allow two full days for central Florence, give major galleries separate time and use Santa Maria Novella as your rail-arrival reference.
How long to spend in Florence
Allow two full sightseeing days for a first Florence visit, plus arrival and departure time. That is our planning recommendation for a central walk, one substantial gallery and time across the Arno. Add a third full day if both the Uffizi and Accademia are essential, you want several Duomo-complex visits, or you need a slower pace. A day trip can cover the main streets and squares, but it forces harder choices about interiors. Do not count a late check-in as a sightseeing day.
Start with the Duomo, then walk south
Use Piazza del Duomo as your first orientation point, continue towards Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi exterior, then reach the Arno and Ponte Vecchio. This sequence joins the central landmarks without repeatedly crossing the city. Seeing the cathedral square is not the same commitment as entering the cathedral complex or climbing the dome. If a climb is a priority, consult the Duomo’s own official booking system before allocating that block; this guide does not promise climb availability or step-free access.
Italo: Florence station and central-city orientationChoose a gallery for the art you want
The Uffizi is the substantial painting-collection choice, with works by Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael and Caravaggio among many others. Allow it a major block rather than treating it as a quick stop between lunch and a train. If Michelangelo’s David is your priority, that is an Accademia booking, not an Uffizi inclusion. You can visit both on a longer stay; on two full days, choosing one leaves more time for the city outside museums.
Uffizi: collection, timetable and visitor servicesUffizi hours and the current ticket choice
The normal published Uffizi hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 8.15 a.m.–6.30 p.m., with Monday closure except special openings. The current regular named ticket is €25 when purchased on the day of entry or €29 when purchased before the entry date. Those are the museum’s published regular single-ticket prices, not a guarantee that a desired slot is available. For a short stay, reserving a suitable time can matter more than the lower same-day price. Check eligibility separately for reductions and free admission.
Uffizi: current hours and named-ticket pricesVisiting on 30 October 2026
The Uffizi Galleries have posted a national-strike notice for 30 October 2026. The notice guarantees the Uffizi gallery opening from 1.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and Boboli Gardens throughout the day, with last admission one hour before closing for both. Do not build that morning around normal Uffizi hours. Other closures or disruptions may occur; use the dated official notice before travelling.
Uffizi: 30 October strike arrangementsCross the Arno for Santo Spirito and Pitti
After Ponte Vecchio, use the Pitti Palace area and Santo Spirito as a different walking block. Choose Pitti if another museum interior interests you, or investigate Boboli if a garden visit is a priority. Neither is simply a free extension of walking through the district: compare the actual admission product and opening day. A walk through Santo Spirito can stand on its own without adding another ticketed attraction. Leave the hillier viewpoints as optional additions rather than necessary luggage routes.
Florence orientation: Ponte Vecchio, Pitti and Santo SpiritoArriving by train: choose Firenze Santa Maria Novella
Firenze Santa Maria Novella, often shortened to Firenze SMN, is the central station used in Italo’s Florence guide. The operator advertises Rome–Florence journeys around an hour and a half, but that is a route indication, not your exact departure time or a hotel-to-hotel transfer. Read the stations and running time on the selected service. Around SMN suits a short stay with rail connections; the Duomo–Signoria area suits repeated central walks; across the river around Santo Spirito suits an Oltrarno-led stay. Compare the luggage walk before choosing a room.
Italo: Firenze SMN and high-speed connectionsArriving at Florence Airport: tram T2
GEST lists tram T2 between Peretola Airport and the city centre, with an advertised journey of about 20 minutes and an airport stop about two minutes’ walk from arrivals. That is tram time, not aircraft-to-hotel time. The operator also publishes baggage limits: one bag up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg travels free; larger permitted luggage requires an additional ticket, and there are maximum size and weight limits. Read those rules if you have a large suitcase. Check the directional first and last departures rather than assuming all-night service.
GEST: airport tram, baggage and operating timesA workable two-day visit
Use the first full day for the Duomo square, the central walking sequence and your chosen booked interior. Keep the evening near the area where you finish. Use the second for the Uffizi if it is your main gallery, followed by a shorter cross-river walk; reverse these days around reservations and the Uffizi’s normal Monday closure. If the gallery takes your energy, drop the extra museum rather than forcing it into late afternoon. This is a suggested allocation, not a timetable or a reservation.
Do you need a car or a countryside day?
A central Florence visit does not require a rental car. Add a vehicle only for a wider route that benefits from it, and obtain the property’s access and parking instructions before driving in. For two full days, our recommendation is to keep both in Florence. Add a countryside or another-city day when you have another full day to spare; a Florence hotel does not make dispersed rural Tuscany reachable by a single train.
Access and booking limits
Uffizi lists an access ramp in Via della Ninna and links to separate lift and museum-access notices. If lifts or wheelchair access are essential, read those notices before fixing your route rather than assuming every entrance is interchangeable. Operational pages checked on 24 October 2026; no live ticket stock, rail departure or accommodation inventory has been checked.
