Which Bologna food tour should you choose?
Choose the two-hour Taste of Bologna walk sold by Bologna Welcome if you want a guided introduction that leaves much of the day free. Choose Taste Bologna's four-hour Classic tour if food is the main morning activity and you want a progressive meal. Choose the Bologna Food Tasting Box if you prefer independent stops spread across your stay rather than a guide and a fixed group. These are three distinct purchases, not different prices for the same itinerary. Product details and advertised adult prices were checked on 26 October 2026; dated booking availability was not verified.

The €55, two-hour Taste of Bologna walk
Bologna Welcome lists a certified guide, three food tastings and a voucher for a sweet treat. The meeting point is in Piazza del Nettuno, in front of the statue, and participants should arrive 10 minutes early. The group can contain up to 20 people and the visit can be bilingual. Treat this as a short tasting introduction, not a guaranteed full lunch or a private appointment. The published English programme through March is Friday to Sunday at 16:00; April to October also has Monday to Thursday at 11:00. A weekday morning listing for October is not evidence of the same departure in November. Cancellation or amendment is allowed up to 48 hours before the scheduled start under the listed terms.
Bologna Welcome: Taste of Bologna walking tourTaste Bologna’s Classic tour: give it the morning and lunch slot
The Classic programme lists breakfast, a handmade pasta portion, cured meats and cheeses with balsamic vinegar, local wines and gelato. It covers the Quadrilatero and Mercato delle Erbe areas. The advertised adult price starts at €95, with a maximum group of 10. Its practical information lists 10:00 on weekdays and 09:30 on Saturday, meeting at the Piazza Maggiore corner with Via de' Pignattari; use the exact confirmation instructions when booked. The regular group programme runs Monday to Saturday except holidays, with Sundays reserved for private tours. Allow four hours and do not reserve another substantial lunch immediately afterwards. A solo traveller can book, but the operator states a minimum of two participants is needed for a group departure to run.
Taste Bologna: Classic tour programme and conditionsThe €43 tasting box: independent vouchers, not a guided tour
Bologna Welcome's box includes a city map, a suggested route, audio guides and seven adult tasting vouchers. Collect it from the tourist information point at Piazza Maggiore 1/e. It is valid for 72 hours from first use, which makes it useful when you want to divide the tastings between sightseeing sessions. The children's €28 version for ages 5–11 has five vouchers, not seven. The listed collection times do not establish that every participating food business stays open continuously. Use the addresses and instructions on the vouchers, then fit the stops into their opening times. The product asks for advance notification of intolerances; it does not publish a blanket allergen-free guarantee.
Bologna Welcome: self-guided food tasting boxCoeliac disease, vegetarian diets and allergies change the choice
The €55 Taste of Bologna walk explicitly says it is not suitable for people with coeliac disease. Do not treat its request to report intolerances as overriding that exclusion. Taste Bologna says its Classic tour can accommodate vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free requests, with requirements supplied at booking. Its FAQ also says it cannot guarantee complete absence of cross-contamination for severe allergies. That is an important limitation, not a food-safety certification. Ask for the proposed substitutions and cross-contact arrangements before committing if a restriction is medically important. A tasting list built around pasta, cured meats and cheese cannot be assumed to suit every diet unchanged.
Taste Bologna: Classic tour programme and conditionsWalking, pushchairs and timing around other visits
Taste Bologna describes about 1.5–2 km of walking with stops, over flat ground including historic cobbles. It says its group route is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, but the route is fixed; it recommends a private programme when an adapted itinerary is needed. The family notes also warn that some stops have limited pushchair space or no baby-changing facilities. Treat those as operator descriptions rather than an independent accessibility inspection. For a two-day Bologna visit, put a four-hour tour in one morning and a reserved monument visit later with a gap; use the two-hour walk or independent vouchers if the Archiginnasio and a hill outing already fill the day.
Taste Bologna: Classic tour programme and conditionsWhen to skip a tour, and what a city tasting does not include
You can browse the Quadrilatero lanes and Mercato delle Erbe independently, choosing and paying for individual foods. A guided walk earns its extra cost when you want explanation, organised stops and a group; the voucher box earns it when its actual inclusions suit what you want to taste. None of the three products compared here is advertised as a visit to a Parmigiano Reggiano dairy, a Parma ham producer or a Modena balsamic production site. Cheese or balsamic served in Bologna is a tasting, not proof of travel to its producer. Choose a separate producer itinerary if seeing production is the reason for booking, and account for its transport rather than treating it as another central walking stop.
