Ravenna travel guide: mosaics, tickets and a one-day route

Plan Ravenna’s mosaic monuments, compare the 2026 two-, four- and five-monument tickets, and choose a Bologna day trip or overnight stay without confusing Nuovo with Classe.

Is Ravenna worth a day trip or an overnight stay?

Give Ravenna a full day if the mosaics at San Vitale, Galla Placidia and the other central monuments are the reason for coming. The historic centre works well on foot from the railway station. An overnight stay is useful if you want slower museum time, an evening in town or a separate visit to Sant’Apollinare in Classe; you do not need to move hotels merely to see the central group.

For a first visit, the four-monument ticket is the useful middle choice: it adds Galla Placidia and the Neonian Baptistery to San Vitale and Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. Choose the five-monument version if the Archiepiscopal Museum and Chapel of St Andrew are part of your day. A two-monument ticket leaves out Galla Placidia, so it is a poor match if the starry mausoleum is your main reason for travelling.

Ticket validity, reductions and reservations

Ravenna Tourism’s ticket schedule, effective from 8 January 2026, says each combination is valid for seven days with one entry per monument. The five-monument wording counts the museum and its chapel together. This is not a citywide pass for every UNESCO site, and it does not include a return visit whenever you like.

Children aged six to ten are free on the two-monument ticket but pay €2 for the four-monument route or €4 for the five-monument route; children aged zero to five are free under the listed conditions. Do not assume one child policy applies to every ticket. Book the intended route and required entry appointments before choosing a tight return train. The municipal tourism page gives advance bookings priority, with on-the-day entry subject to availability.

The prices above were reconfirmed against the municipal source on 26 October 2026. Some detailed Ravenna Mosaici information links returned errors during checking; no live slot inventory is claimed here. Use the operator’s working homepage to reach current booking information, rather than relying on an old English-language deep link.

A one-day walking route from Ravenna station

This is an editorial route, not a set of guaranteed admission times. From the main station exit at Piazzale Farini, start with Sant’Apollinare Nuovo on Via di Roma. Its long nave mosaics make a different visit from San Vitale’s central-plan interior. Continue towards Dante’s Tomb and Piazza San Francesco, then leave time for lunch around the central streets rather than travelling out to the coast.

In the next block, group the Neonian Baptistery with the cathedral area. If you bought the five-monument ticket, add the adjacent Archiepiscopal Museum and Chapel of St Andrew here. Continue through the centre towards San Vitale on Via Argentario and pair it with nearby Galla Placidia. Return towards the station through the old town. If the available Galla Placidia appointment is in the morning, reverse the circuit; the booking should control the sequence, not this suggested order.

How much should you fit into the day?

Choose the four central monuments plus a lunch break for a first day with time to look rather than count entrances. With a five-monument ticket, keep the museum visit in its own block and reduce optional shopping or another museum. A late arrival, a long lunch and a departure soon after mid-afternoon make the full route less forgiving.

If mosaic visits start to feel repetitive, stop for a walk around Piazza del Popolo or the Dante area instead of adding another paid interior. The ticket’s seven-day validity makes an overnight stay useful for spreading visits, but it does not extend daily opening hours or waive reservations. This is pacing advice, not a sourced minimum number of hours required in Ravenna.

Opening hours: avoid extending a dated timetable

The municipal San Vitale page lists daily opening from 09:00 to 19:00 for 8 March–1 November 2026, with last admission thirty minutes before closing. It also lists closure on 25 December and 1 January. Those San Vitale hours are not evidence that every included monument admits visitors until the same minute.

For visits after 1 November, do not reuse the summer closing time from this guide. The operator’s homepage carries separate notices, including a Neonian Baptistery celebration notice beginning in October 2026. Its detailed notice was not retrievable during checking, so no exact interruption window is asserted here. Establish the available entry appointments before setting your walking order, especially around ceremonies.

Getting to Ravenna by train

Search for Ravenna station, not a coastal resort with Ravenna in its name. The city’s main station entrance is at Piazzale Farini 1; the Via Antico Squero entrance faces the Darsena side. The municipal tourism authority places the station about 200 metres from the historic centre’s limited-traffic zone, making a car unnecessary for the central monument circuit.

From Bologna, compare the dated outward and return trains before booking entries. Ravenna is a separate destination from the main Bologna–Rimini corridor, so do not board a Rimini train on the assumption it passes through Ravenna. No fixed fare, departure interval or journey duration is promised here. The official tourism FAQ describes Bologna Airport access through Bologna Centrale using the Marconi Express and an onward train; that involves a change, not a direct airport train to Ravenna.

Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is not Sant’Apollinare in Classe

Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is the basilica on the central walking route and is included in the diocesan ticket combinations above. Sant’Apollinare in Classe is a separate visit outside the centre. Do not substitute one for the other in a ticket booking or assume that the five-monument ticket covers both.

Ravenna Tourism identifies bus 4 from the station or Piazza Caduti per la Libertà as a public-transport option for Classe. Use Start Romagna’s current timetable to establish the outbound and return service on your day; the tourism FAQ alone does not certify a departure or fare. For a first short day, keep the central circuit. Add Classe in a separate half-day if its basilica matters enough to justify the extra journey.

Where to stay, and when to stay in Bologna instead

Choose the historic centre around Piazza del Popolo or Piazza San Francesco if evenings on foot and short returns between visits matter most. A property on the station side is useful with luggage and an early train, but compare its exact street and walking route rather than assuming every station-labelled hotel is equally convenient. Ask a central property for legal vehicle access and parking before driving into the limited-traffic area.

A beach-town address is a coastal holiday choice, not the same base as Ravenna’s historic centre. Likewise, Porto Corsini is not the central railway station. If you have one sightseeing day and are already sleeping in Bologna, a return day trip avoids another hotel move. Stay in Ravenna when the second morning or evening is part of the trip, not just because it appears next on a regional list.
