Assisi travel guide: a one-day route, station transfer and stay choices

Plan the Basilica of Saint Francis, Piazza del Comune and the upper town, with the bus from Assisi station and a clear choice between a day trip and an overnight stay.

Visit Assisi for a day or stay overnight?

A full day works for the Basilica of Saint Francis, Piazza del Comune and a walk through Assisi's upper streets. Stay one night if you want time before and after the main day-trip period, a religious visit without rushing between churches, or room for a second Franciscan site outside the centre. Assisi is a hillside town: the station arrival and the basilica visit are separate stages of the day.

Choose the historic centre if being able to walk out into the old town matters most. Santa Maria degli Angeli suits a station-based stay and a visit to the Porziuncola, but it does not put you inside hilltop Assisi. Do not book the lower town expecting the Basilica of Saint Francis to be a level stroll from your hotel.

Book Assisi Centro if you want the train-plus-bus journey

Trenitalia's Assisi Link combines the train to Assisi with the bus from the station forecourt to the historic centre. Select Assisi Centro as the origin or destination when buying the combined journey. Selecting only Assisi gives you the railway station arrival, not the complete uphill transfer. The operator lists the bus component at €1.30 one way, added to the rail fare, with no discounts on that bus component.

Busitalia describes the station-to-centre ride as about ten minutes. That is time on the bus, not a guarantee that your train connects immediately or that you are then at the basilica door. Allow time to find the stop, wait and walk from the arrival stop. Keep your return bus and train in the same plan; do not spend the last available connection window inside a church.

27 October access restriction takes priority over normal hours

The basilica's official notice checked on 26 October 2026 says the Lower Church will close at 12:00 on 27 October, while the Upper Church will remain only partially accessible throughout the day. For a visit on that date, do not promise yourself a normal afternoon tour of both churches. Move the main basilica visit to another day if seeing the full complex is the purpose of the trip. The notice does not establish unrestricted access to the crypt.

For ordinary visits, the official hours page separates summer and winter opening, services and guided visits. The winter panel lists the Lower Church 06:00–18:30, with Wednesday closure at 17:30; the Upper Church 08:30–18:00; and the crypt 06:00–18:15. These are opening windows, not uninterrupted sightseeing hours during worship. The seasonal labels combine clock-change terminology with month ranges, so avoid planning around a marginal late closing in the late-October transition.

A practical one-day walking sequence

Put the Basilica of Saint Francis first on a normal visiting day, with time for the Lower and Upper Churches and the tomb when access permits. Reserve the morning for it rather than treating the whole complex as a short photo stop. The timetable separates guided group visits from general opening; an open church is not automatic permission for a guided commentary during worship.

Continue uphill along Via San Francesco towards Piazza del Comune. Use the square and the Temple of Minerva frontage as the lunch break in the route. In the afternoon, choose San Rufino and the higher streets before continuing towards Santa Chiara. If you still have energy and daylight, add the climb towards Rocca Maggiore for a separate fortress visit; otherwise keep the lower return towards your bus stop. This sequence is editorial pacing, not a booked tour, and the hills make it a poor plan for anyone expecting a flat walking circuit.

What to add with a second day

Santa Maria degli Angeli is the straightforward extra if your interest is Franciscan history: its basilica encloses the Porziuncola in the lower town. It is a different church from the Basilica of Saint Francis and deserves its own stop rather than a mistaken arrival at the station.

San Damiano is outside the main upper-town circuit, while the Eremo delle Carceri is on the slopes of Mount Subasio, about 4 km from the town according to the regional tourism authority. Do not combine the hermitage with a short centre visit on the assumption that the ordinary station shuttle serves it. Arrange a separate transfer or a deliberately planned walk with suitable conditions. If you want a different town rather than another sanctuary, give Perugia a separate day instead of trying to see both historic centres between arrival and departure trains.

Umbria Tourism: outlying Franciscan sites

Budget the transfer separately from visits

The €1.30 Assisi Link figure is only the bus component of a combined rail journey. It is not a day ticket for all Assisi travel, a return fare, or an admission charge. Price the rail origin, both directions and any outlying transfers separately. This prevents a cheap station fare from disguising the cost of reaching a remote hotel or the hermitage.

For basilica timing, use the official seasonal panel and special notices together. The winter guided-visit window is listed as weekdays 09:00–16:15, with Saturday last entry at 16:00; it is not the same as the early opening available for prayer. Leave space in the day for worship and any restricted sections rather than buying a tightly timed onward journey on the assumption that every room is continuously available.
