Which Rome to Naples train should you book?
For a first visit to central Naples, search Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale and compare direct high-speed services. Choose by the named stations, scheduled arrival and fare conditions, not just the operator's lowest advertised price. Napoli Afragola is a different station outside the central city; do not select it as though it were another name for Centrale.
Italo's route page checked on 24 October 2026 contains a 55-minute headline, but its displayed 24–30 October timetable lists many Termini–Centrale journeys around 1 hour 17 minutes to 1 hour 28 minutes. Use the duration attached to the actual departure you buy. The headline is not a reliable door-to-door planning allowance.
Italo: Rome–Naples route and dated timetableTermini, Tiburtina and your Rome departure
Start with Termini if you are choosing a straightforward central-Rome departure. If a search offers Roma Tiburtina instead, compare the complete journey from your accommodation before accepting it. The stations are not interchangeable boarding points: travel to the one printed on the ticket. Leave time for the station entrance, finding the platform, any access checks and reaching your coach.
A train continuing beyond Naples may show Salerno or another final destination on the board. Match the train number and departure time as well as the destination. Do not assume the first southbound train you see accepts your booking.
Choose a Rome base around your departureCompare high-speed trains with slower alternatives
Compare Italo with Trenitalia's Frecciarossa in the operators' booking systems for your date. If Trenitalia also offers Intercity or regional trains, compare their total time and fare against the high-speed departure; a lower price can mean much more of the day spent travelling. Do not transfer a regional-ticket rule to a reserved high-speed service.
For an overnight stay in Naples, an arrival that leaves a useful afternoon may be worth more than a small saving. For a day trip, buy the return around the time you actually want in the city, leaving room to get back to Centrale. Adding Pompeii or a ferry to that same day creates another journey, not a free extension of this rail route.
Trenitalia vs Italo: compare train and fareWhat does a Rome to Naples train ticket cost?
Italo advertises this route from €14.90. That is a published starting price checked on 24 October 2026, not a fare found for your travel date or a guarantee of available seats. Compare the final price for every passenger, the selected class and any extras before paying. A last-minute or peak departure can have a different price.
Separate the seat class from the fare conditions. A more expensive class does not by itself mean a freely refundable ticket. If the departure depends on a flight landing on time, the cheapest restrictive fare may be the wrong choice.
Italo: advertised Rome–Naples starting fareChanges, refunds and missed trains
Italo's published Low Cost fare permits a date or time change up to 72 hours before departure with a 60% surcharge plus any fare difference. Economy allows changes up to three minutes before departure with a 20% fee plus any difference, and lists a 40% cancellation refund. Flex lists an 80% cancellation refund and different change and missed-train conditions. Read the conditions for the specific offer in your basket; promotional products and add-ons can differ.
These are Italo rules, not Trenitalia rules. Keep the booking reference and ticket available offline, and do not board another departure or operator's train without having the ticket changed or buying the correct entitlement.
Italo: current fare conditionsFrom Fiumicino Airport to a Naples train
If your journey starts at Fiumicino, treat the airport-to-Rome leg and the Rome-to-Naples leg as a connection unless the itinerary explicitly says otherwise. Leonardo express reaches Termini; that still leaves an intercity transfer. Landing time is not the time you reach the railway platform. Immigration, baggage collection and the walk to the airport station can change the connection you can make.
A cheap separately booked high-speed ticket is not evidence of protection after a delayed flight. Leave a buffer suited to that risk or use a fare whose changes you can accept. Do not book a tight connection by adding only the two trains' running times.
Italy train tickets: purchase and validation rulesArriving at Napoli Centrale and getting into the city
Centrale is the mainline arrival to use for a central-Naples visit. Follow the signs for Garibaldi for the connected metro system. ANM's Line 1 serves Garibaldi, Duomo, Università, Municipio and Toledo; choose the stop around your accommodation rather than automatically walking from the mainline station with luggage. Municipio is the useful port-side reference, but reaching it is not the same thing as being at a ferry boarding gate.
Buy the local transport entitlement separately unless your ticket explicitly includes it. ANM publishes escalator and lift works affecting stations, so a rail-plus-metro route is not a guaranteed step-free transfer. If stairs matter, check the current equipment notices for the exact stations or arrange another final transfer.

Check the two station names, train number, date, arrival time, passenger details and change deadline. For any onward ferry or separate train, allow for the transfer from Centrale as well as the connection itself. Route and ticket pages were checked on 24 October 2026; this guide does not verify a particular departure's seat stock, disruption status or onward ferry timetable.
