7 day Italy itinerary: Rome and Florence in six nights

Spend three nights in Rome and three in Florence, with one intercity transfer and a realistic seven-day plan including arrival and departure.

Seven days: Rome and Florence, with one hotel change

For a first 7 day Italy itinerary, choose Rome and Florence rather than trying to fit Rome, Florence and Venice into six nights. This suggested route starts in Rome on day 1, transfers to Florence on day 4 and departs from Florence on day 7. Sleep in Rome on nights 1–3 and Florence on nights 4–6. It assumes you can arrive in Rome and leave from Florence, or make an independently planned onward journey after day 7. Arrival and departure are part of the seven days, not extra days hidden outside the itinerary.

Your six-night booking ledger

Nights 1, 2 and 3
Rome: one property, three nights
Nights 4, 5 and 6
Florence: one property, three nights
Day 4 transfer
Rome to Firenze Santa Maria Novella; choose the actual departure station
Day 7
Departure day; no seventh hotel night included

Day 1: arrive in Rome and keep the evening local

Reach the property, leave your luggage and take a short walk near your base. Around Pantheon–Navona, use the nearby squares; in Monti, stay around the district rather than crossing the city for a second arrival-day plan. Do not reserve the Colosseum immediately after an uncertain flight arrival. If using Leonardo express from Fiumicino, its stated 32 minutes gets you to Termini, not to your hotel. Overnight in Rome.

Day 2: Colosseum, Forum and Palatine

Make ancient Rome the main commitment. Choose whether the ordinary admission product meets your needs or whether arena or underground access matters, and reserve the exact product before arranging the rest of the day. Leave space for entry checks, the archaeological area and a meal rather than promising another major museum afterwards. Use a short Monti walk if you still have energy. Overnight in Rome.

Day 3: central Rome, or a Vatican-priority day

For the walking-led version, join Piazza Navona, the Pantheon square and Trevi Fountain, then use the afternoon for a slower Trastevere walk or a longer break. This sequence does not include admission to ticketed interiors. If the Vatican Museums are your priority, replace a substantial part of this day with a separately reserved Vatican visit; do not claim you will fit the same central walk, Vatican Museums and Trastevere comfortably into one day. Overnight in Rome.

Day 4: train to Florence and a first central walk

Choose a Rome-to-Firenze SMN train after breakfast and checkout, allowing time to reach its actual Rome station. Italo advertises Rome–Florence around an hour and a half; the selected train’s timetable controls, and checkout-to-check-in takes longer. Leave luggage at your Florence property if it offers storage, then walk from Piazza del Duomo towards Piazza della Signoria and the Arno. Keep the afternoon flexible rather than attaching a non-refundable gallery slot to the train arrival. Overnight in Florence.

Day 5: Uffizi and the river

Give the Uffizi your main booked block if Renaissance painting is a priority. After a meal and break, take a shorter walk around the river and Ponte Vecchio rather than forcing another large collection into the same day. The normal published opening pattern is Tuesday–Sunday, with Monday closure except special openings. If this day is a Monday, swap days 5 and 6. The museum has a separate strike notice for 30 October 2026, so use the Florence guide’s dated warning if that affects your week. Overnight in Florence.

Day 6: one Florence priority, then Santo Spirito

Choose the interior you most want beyond the Uffizi: Accademia for David, a specific Duomo-complex visit, or Pitti Palace. Book that attraction through its own official system; an Uffizi admission is not a general Florence museum ticket. Use the remaining time for the Oltrarno streets around Santo Spirito and a meal. If you prefer less museum time, omit the extra interior. This plan keeps the day in Florence rather than squeezing in a countryside excursion. Overnight in Florence.

Day 7: depart without another sightseeing obligation

Check out and make the journey to your actual departure airport or next station. For Florence Peretola Airport, GEST identifies tram T2 as the city-centre connection, with an advertised ride around 20 minutes; leave separate time for reaching the stop, waiting and airport procedures. This is not a transfer plan to Pisa or Bologna airports. An early flight may require another arrangement depending on the first service and your accommodation. There is no seventh overnight in this six-night plan.

If your return flight is from Rome

Do not book this plan unchanged and assume Florence is beside Rome’s airport. Compare moving back to Rome on day 6 and sleeping there before the flight; that turns the night ledger into Rome nights 1–3, Florence nights 4–5 and Rome night 6. It also shortens your Florence time and adds another hotel change. Alternatively reverse the two-city route if your flights suit Florence first and Rome last. Do not put a separate intercity ticket immediately before a flight without allowing for disruption and airport formalities.

Why Venice is not in this version

Venice adds another city-to-city move and another property to a week that already includes arrival and departure days. It is possible to choose all three, but it changes the trip into a quicker sample and removes flexible time. If Venice is the main reason for travelling, substitute it for one of the two bases and research that route rather than treating it as a day trip inserted into this schedule. Naples, the Amalfi Coast and rural Tuscany are also outside this particular seven-day route.

What to book, and what to leave flexible

Fix the flights and six-night ledger first, then the essential Rome admission, chosen Florence museum and intercity train. Compare rail fare restrictions rather than assuming every cheap ticket can be changed. Keep arrival-day sightseeing and the post-transfer afternoon flexible. No fixed total budget is quoted: price the six actual room nights, your party’s train, airport transfers, admissions and meals for the dates you intend to use.

Choose a Rome base for the first three nights

Pantheon–Navona suits the central walk, Monti suits ancient Rome, and Termini suits a rail-led arrival or departure. Compare the final property approach and sleeping arrangements, not only the neighbourhood name.

Pace and access limits

This is an editorial allocation, not a guaranteed itinerary or an accessible-route certification. Reduce walking and interior visits if heat, young children, uneven surfaces or reduced mobility change your pace. Transport and Florence service pages were checked on 24 October 2026; date-specific train seats, accommodation and admission inventory have not been checked.
