Which part of Liguria should you visit?
Genoa divides the main coastal choices. West towards France is the Riviera di Ponente, including Savona, Finale Ligure, Alassio, Sanremo and Ventimiglia. East towards Tuscany is the Riviera di Levante, with Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Sestri Levante and the Cinque Terre area. Liguria is long enough that one room is not equally convenient for all of them.
For two or three days, choose the city or one stretch of coast. For five to seven days, combine Genoa with one coastal base. Add the opposite Riviera only if you have more time or a specific reason to travel through it, such as continuing towards France. These are editorial pacing recommendations, not minimum-stay rules.

| Your decision | Best fit | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Genoa | Old town, palace collections and harbour museums | A city base; repeated Cinque Terre days add rail travel |
| Camogli or Santa Margherita Ligure | Eastern Riviera towns, with Portofino as a separate outing | Choose the actual station and last leg; Portofino is not at the station |
| Levanto or a Cinque Terre village | Repeated visits within the five-village area | Room access, steps and rail disruption matter more than a map pin |
| La Spezia | A rail gateway for Cinque Terre and onward Tuscany travel | An urban base outside the villages, not a village overnight experience |
| Finale Ligure | Western-coast time split between the waterfront and Finalborgo | Finalborgo is inland; the room’s quarter changes daily access |
| Sanremo | A far-western stay and onward movement towards France | Do not choose it as a convenient daily base for the eastern Riviera |
Genoa: give the city time before leaving for the coast
Genoa is more than the interchange between Milan and the sea. Via Garibaldi and its palace museums, the lanes around San Lorenzo and Porto Antico make a workable two-day city visit. The aquarium and Galata maritime museum are separate substantial choices; do not turn a brief arrival afternoon into a promise to see both.
Use Piazza Principe or Brignole according to your accommodation and train. A room in the centre works for city evenings and a nearby coastal outing; it is less useful if nearly every day will begin with a train towards Cinque Terre. In that case, spend a shorter city stay first and move closer to the villages.

Camogli suits a compact harbour-and-town stay. Santa Margherita Ligure is the practical starting point to consider when Portofino is the main outing; Rapallo is another town in the same wider Tigullio area. Sestri Levante is further along the coast and works better when you want time there rather than daily returns to Genoa.
The railway station named S. Margherita Ligure–Portofino is in Santa Margherita Ligure, not beside Portofino’s harbour. AMT identifies line 782 as the Santa Margherita–Portofino link and sells a specific single-ride product as well as including the route in MetDaily. Train arrival still leaves this onward leg.
Treat sightseeing boats as an optional addition only after finding the actual date and return service. A summer boat map does not establish a winter connection. Do not add San Fruttuoso or a headland trail as an automatic easy extension of a harbour visit: those are separate access and walking decisions.

The five villages are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Levanto and La Spezia are the rail gateways on either side. Choose a village for evenings there, Levanto for a coastal gateway stay, or La Spezia when the rail arrival and onward journey are more important than sleeping in the villages.
Do not make seeing all five villages the default one-day target. Select fewer stops if you want a meal, a substantial walk or time away from platforms. A village visit and a trail between villages are different activities; confirm the exact park route and weather restrictions before making a walking link part of the plan.
Trenitalia’s 2026 Cinque Terre seasonal fare period runs from 14 March to 1 November. Its A/B/C calendar changes the price by date. Do not carry the special fare period or enhanced summer pattern into a winter itinerary, and do not assume a city transport pass covers these trains.
Trenitalia: Cinque Terre seasonal dates, fare calendar and rail coverageWinter rail works: dates that can change the eastern-coast plan
The national park’s current ticketing notice lists train suspensions between Corniglia and La Spezia for the weekends 14–15 November and 19–20 December 2026, 9–10 January and 6–7 February 2027. It also identifies overnight interruptions between Levanto and La Spezia from 22:30 to 06:30 on Friday and Saturday nights of the affected weekends.
If travelling on those dates, price and time the revised journey in Trenitalia before booking a room or a reserved onward train. The notice is not evidence of a normal replacement-bus frequency or an unchanged journey time. Keeping the hotel near a station does not remove a line closure.
For hiking, use the park’s exact trail-status pages separately. A train ticket or open village is not proof that the coast path is open, and a general no-warning banner dated weeks earlier is not a fresh weather clearance.
Cinque Terre National Park: dated winter rail-suspension noticeWestern Liguria: Finale Ligure or Sanremo
Choose Finale Ligure when you want to divide time between the seafront and the inland old quarter of Finalborgo. Finalmarina, Finalpia and Finalborgo are different parts of the destination; a room carrying the same town name may not give the beach or old-town access you expected. Albenga and Alassio are alternatives further west, with different town and seaside emphases.
Sanremo belongs to the far-western Riviera dei Fiori, nearer the French end of the region. It fits a stay focused on that coast or a through-trip towards Ventimiglia. It is not a sensible substitute for Levanto if Cinque Terre is the daily objective.
Use this westward option instead of adding it as a rushed extra to Genoa, Portofino and Cinque Terre. With a car, establish overnight parking before paying for a central room. Without one, choose the room’s actual station and onward local connection, not just the municipality.
Italia.it: western Riviera towns and Finale Ligure’s distinct quartersA useful five-day Liguria route
For a first eastern-coast trip, our suggested five-day sequence uses four nights. Arrive in Genoa on day one and keep the afternoon around the old town and harbour. Stay in Genoa for nights one and two. On day two, give the main block to Via Garibaldi and one museum, adding a coastal district only if the day remains manageable.
On day three, travel to Levanto and stay there for nights three and four. Keep that afternoon in Levanto rather than carrying bags through several villages. Use day four for a small selection of Cinque Terre villages, with a hike only if that exact route is open and appropriate for your group. On day five, depart towards your next destination or use a limited final visit if the onward train allows it.
For a Portofino-focused version, replace Levanto with Santa Margherita Ligure and use day four for Portofino plus time back in your base town. For a western version, replace it with Finale Ligure and divide the time between the seafront and Finalborgo. These are alternatives, not extra obligatory stops in the same five days.
Italia.it: geography supporting the alternative coastal sequencesWhen to go, what to book and whether to rent a car
Choose summer when swimming and beach services are the main purpose, accepting that the popular coastal stops share that demand. For town walks and museums, the trip need not depend on swimming weather. In the cooler months, build around a rail-linked base, shorter outdoor days and a useful indoor alternative instead of relying on seasonal boats or uninterrupted hiking.
Autumn and winter plans need flexibility for heavy rain, wind and official alerts. Even museums can close under a red alert. Keep a weather-sensitive walk separate from a non-refundable onward departure, and read the applicable rail-work notices for your actual dates.
A car is unnecessary for the Genoa-plus-rail-linked-coast route above. It becomes more useful when your chosen accommodation or inland stops are away from the railway, but introduces parking and access restrictions in small centres. Compare room, parking and transfer totals before deciding. No hotel prices, beach-club charges or live seat inventory have been checked for this guide.
