How many days do you need in Cinque Terre?
A day trip works best with two or three villages. Two full days let you divide the coast into shorter visits, sit down for meals and leave room for weather or a delayed train. Three nights are useful when the first and last days include long journeys; two nights can work if you arrive early and leave late. These are suggested pacing choices, not access requirements.
Choose the trip you actually want. For beaches, spend longer in Monterosso instead of collecting five station stops. For the small harbours and built-up village streets, combine Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore. For Corniglia, allow for the uphill arrival rather than treating the railway station as the village centre. A substantial hike needs its own block of daylight and a qualified open route.
Cinque Terre National Park: the five villagesThe five villages: what to see in each
From west to east, the railway order is Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Levanto is beyond Monterosso; La Spezia is beyond Riomaggiore. This order makes a useful planning map, but does not mean every train stops everywhere. Read the actual stops before boarding.
Monterosso has the broad Fegina beach beside the station area and a separate old-town quarter with San Giovanni Battista church. It is the strongest choice when a beach afternoon matters. Vernazza suits time around the harbour and village lanes rather than a long sandy-beach session.
Corniglia sits on a cliff about 100 metres above the sea. The park describes the Lardarina approach as 377 steps, with a road alternative; do not book a short connection on the assumption that the centre is beside the platform. Manarola’s harbour and hillside streets give a different visit from Monterosso’s seafront. Riomaggiore’s main village climbs between steep terraced hills, with a harbour below and the Via dell’Amore entrance by the station.
Cinque Terre National Park: Corniglia’s elevated setting and station approachGetting there: use La Spezia Centrale or Levanto
Search the complete train journey to your chosen village, not simply to “Cinque Terre”. La Spezia Centrale is the eastern gateway for approaches from Pisa and the Tuscany side; Levanto is the western gateway. Some longer-distance services also call at Monterosso, so compare a direct arrival with a gateway change rather than automatically transferring.
Keep luggage at your accommodation or an independently confirmed storage facility before sightseeing. A suitcase makes station stairs and a steep village approach much less convenient, even when the train leg is short. A car is not needed for the village sequence here. If driving into the area, settle the overnight parking and last leg before booking accommodation rather than trying to drive from harbour to harbour.
Cinque Terre National Park: rail gateways and transport accessTrains, single tickets and the Cinque Terre Card
Trenitalia’s special 2026 fare period runs from 14 March to 1 November. Prices vary with its A/B/C date calendar. Do not use an old flat fare or assume the enhanced seasonal service pattern continues all winter. A specific date and route are needed for a meaningful ticket comparison.
The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card includes unlimited second-class regional travel between Levanto and La Spezia, in both directions, plus the stated park services. It is not an unlimited Italy rail pass and does not cover every category of train. For one village and a return, compare individual journeys; for repeated regional hops, compare the card against every leg you will actually take.
Keep train travel, paid-trail access, Via dell’Amore admission and boat tickets distinct. A Trekking Card is not the train-inclusive product, and holding a train card does not remove a Via dell’Amore booking requirement.

The park’s ticketing notice announces 48-hour rail suspensions between Corniglia and La Spezia on 14–15 November and 19–20 December 2026, 9–10 January and 6–7 February 2027. It also lists 22:30–06:30 interruptions between Levanto and La Spezia on the affected Friday and Saturday nights. These are not normal weekend timetables. Resolve the revised arrival and return in Trenitalia before paying for a room or an onward reserved train; no replacement-bus frequency is established by that notice.
Cinque Terre National Park: dated rail-suspension noticeBoats and walking: useful additions, not guaranteed connections
The coastal boat operator lists Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso as Cinque Terre landing places. Corniglia is not on that village ferry list. Use the train for a Corniglia visit rather than trying to finish a five-village day entirely by boat.
The operator separates the 19 October–1 November timetable from a 2 November–8 December “Cinque Terre Trip”. The latter PDF describes a La Spezia/Porto Venere outing with Vernazza and Monterosso stops, not the same four-village hop-on service. Its weather-dependent operation is not a dependable substitute for a closed railway.
For the Via dell’Amore, the park states that ordinary day visitors reserve a dated time slot and enter at Riomaggiore, exiting at Manarola. Its general information page still contains opening-hour tables ending in March 2026; use the dated booking session for your visit rather than transferring those old hours to autumn 2026. Other trails have their own status and difficulty. Do not assume an uninterrupted low coastal walk connects all five villages.
Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti: route-specific autumn and winter timetablesA practical two-day Cinque Terre plan
Day one: start with Riomaggiore, allowing time for the village and harbour before moving on. If you have a valid Via dell’Amore reservation and it is operating, use the booked Riomaggiore-to-Manarola passage; otherwise take the train. Spend the next substantial block in Manarola, with lunch there or back in your base. Add Corniglia in the afternoon only if the uphill approach and return trains suit your group.
Day two: visit Vernazza in the morning and keep Monterosso for lunch, the old town and Fegina. In beach weather, stop moving and use the afternoon there. If beach time is irrelevant, shorten Monterosso and give more time to whichever village you missed on day one. Do not insert a long hike into this sequence as though it were a brief walk between platforms.
For a single day, choose Riomaggiore and Manarola with one additional stop, or Vernazza and Monterosso with a longer lunch or beach break. A boat segment can replace a train segment only when the dated service and conditions work. On rail-closure weekends, rebuild the plan from the actual available transport instead of following this normal-service sequence.
Cinque Terre National Park: geography underlying this suggested visit sequenceWhen to go and what to book first
For swimming, choose the warmer part of the year and give Monterosso enough time to justify the beach choice. For village visits, your main limits are rain, daylight and transport rather than a beach-club opening date. Autumn and winter need a less rigid outdoor plan; a free hotel afternoon can be more useful than another prepaid connection.
Book the base and its luggage arrival first, then any reserved Via dell’Amore slot and onward long-distance train. Buy local transport for the actual date and number of journeys. Do not pay for a guided tour assuming it replaces separate transport or access tickets unless its exact inclusions say so.
