Lake Como travel guide: towns, villas and a workable first trip
For a first Lake Como visit, choose one part of the lake. Varenna and Bellagio suit a central-lake town-and-boat day; Como suits a city visit with a short lake outing. Allow two or three nights if you want villas and time by the water without returning to Milan each evening.
Start with the lake’s three branches
Lake Como is an inverted Y. Como sits at the southern end of the western branch, Lecco at the southern end of the eastern branch, and Bellagio on the point between them. Varenna is on the eastern shore near the junction; Menaggio and Tremezzina are across the water on the western shore. Como city and the central-lake towns are not interchangeable arrival points. For one day from Milan, choose Varenna with Bellagio, or Como with time in the city. For a longer visit, choose one overnight base and give the villas a separate day. Our two-to-three-night recommendation is editorial pacing, not a minimum stay or a transport package. Trying to see Como, Bellagio, Varenna and several villas in one day spends too much of a short visit in queues and transfers.

| Compare | Choose it for | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Como city | Cathedral streets, a substantial town and a lakefront walk | At the end of the western branch, not beside Bellagio |
| Varenna | A rail arrival, village waterfront and Villa Monastero | Station, ferry landing and villa are separate walking legs |
| Bellagio | Central-lake lanes, waterfront and Villa Melzi gardens | No train arrival; add a boat or road connection |
| Tremezzina | Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo and Balbianello near Lenno | Two separate visits with transfers and different entry rules |
| Menaggio | A western-shore town stop in the central-lake ferry network | No direct railway; match the final boat or road leg to your room |
Varenna and Bellagio: the simplest central-lake day
Arrive at Varenna Esino by train, walk down to the lakeside and choose whether to visit Villa Monastero before crossing the lake. The villa combines a botanical garden with a house museum. In October 2026 the garden opens daily, while the house museum closes on Tuesdays; a garden ticket is not admission to an open museum on its closing day. Take a scheduled boat to Bellagio only after checking the return options for that date. Explore the waterfront and old lanes, or make the Gardens of Villa Melzi your main paid visit. The villa itself remains private: garden access does not include a house tour. The tourism authority also distinguishes the guided garden visits at Villa Serbelloni from the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni; they are not the same attraction. For a day trip, choose one main garden rather than booking both shores tightly. Return to Varenna with time for the walk uphill to the station. This keeps the outing usable without relying on the final boat to connect to the final train.
Villa Monastero: garden and museum calendarsTremezzina: choose Villa Carlotta or Balbianello first
Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo combines an art museum and botanical garden. Villa del Balbianello is on a promontory near Lenno, further south; arriving at one does not put you at the entrance to the other. Make one your principal visit, then add the second only if its admission and the actual transfers fit. FAI requires advance booking for Balbianello. Its park-only ticket covers the gardens and outdoor areas; the villa-and-park ticket adds a guided interior visit. The selected time is property access, with the interior tour start assigned at the ticket office and a stated maximum wait of 60 minutes. Do not schedule a boat departure immediately after the ticket time. From Lenno, FAI describes a roughly 25-minute uphill walk over a partly gravel path. The paid taxi boat from Lido di Lenno is a separately arranged service, not a public ferry included in admission. FAI says the property has no luggage storage and is only partially accessible; visitors needing mobility arrangements should contact the villa before booking. A lake arrival does not remove the slopes inside the grounds.
FAI: Balbianello booking, visit types and accessHow long to allow: one day or three days
One day from Milan: take the train to Varenna, spend the morning on the waterfront and, if open, at Villa Monastero. Use the afternoon for Bellagio, then return through Varenna. On a day with poor boat connections, keep the whole outing in Varenna instead of forcing the crossing. An alternative day stays in Como city; it does not also promise the central-lake circuit. Three days with two nights: arrive and settle into a central-lake base on day one, keeping the rest of the day near your room. Use day two for a booked Tremezzina villa and a nearby town rather than another hotel move. On day three, visit the opposite central-lake town and return through the railway gateway that fits your onward trip. Put the booked villa day first when availability dictates, and leave room for a weather-related swap. These are suggested sequences, not guaranteed sailings. For a November or winter visit, start with the exact attraction calendar: a longer stay cannot make a closed garden or absent connection available.
Navigazione Laghi: dated journeys and suspension adviceGetting to Lake Como and moving between towns
Use Milano Centrale–Varenna Esino for the central lake, Milano Centrale–Como S. Giovanni for Como city, or Milano Cadorna–Como Lago for an arrival near Como’s waterfront. Trenord’s route pages describe typical direct journeys of about 64, 40 and 60 minutes respectively. Those are rail times, not hotel-arrival times. Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzina require an onward boat or road journey. Navigazione Laghi separates ordinary boats, fast services and the central-lake ferry network. A passenger trip and a vehicle crossing are different purchases; vehicle transport is limited to the stops marked Traghetto. Choose the actual port, not just a hotel’s municipality, and keep train tickets separate from boat tickets unless buying a named combined product. The operator advises reaching the ticket office about 20 minutes before departure, with queues possible in summer and on holidays. That is a minimum planning allowance, not a promise of boarding. Bad weather or strong wave motion can suspend services, so a boat-dependent day needs a land-based alternative.
Navigazione Laghi: ticket offices, services and weather restrictionsWhen to go: garden calendars matter more than a season label
Spring and early autumn are useful editorial choices for a trip centred on gardens and town walks. Summer offers long sightseeing days but more pressure on boats and admission slots. Winter is better planned around a specific open attraction and a verified journey than a general promise of lake-hopping. The Lake Como boat page checked on 25 October 2026 lists an autumn timetable valid from 5 October to 1 November 2026. Do not reuse its departures for a later trip or mistake another lake’s winter heading for a Como timetable. Use the Como route selector for your date and read the validity on the linked document. The attraction calendars also differ. Villa Carlotta lists daily opening through 8 November 2026, followed by selected November weekends and 5–8 December. Villa Monastero lists Tuesday and Wednesday closures in November for both garden and museum, except that 1 November has its own hours. Balbianello publishes reduced November hours and selected December dates. An open hotel does not establish that nearby villas run daily.
Villa Carlotta: actual 2026 autumn and winter opening datesCosts and the next booking decision
Budget separately for your room, rail arrival, lake transport and each villa. A town walk does not require a villa ticket, and a public boat is transport rather than a guided private cruise. Decide which paid visit matters before buying several admissions on opposite shores. For a short visit, the room’s actual arrival route can matter more than a small difference in nightly price. A property above a village may add hills, steps or a taxi to every outing. Keep the detailed accommodation-area choice separate from the sightseeing plan, and establish the final transfer before committing to a non-refundable room.
