Choose your lake town before buying the train ticket
Varenna is the useful rail gateway for a central-lake visit, especially if Bellagio is the next stop. Como is the better arrival for Como city and the southern end of the western branch. Booking a train to Como because the whole destination is called Lake Como can leave a substantial onward journey to the town you actually wanted.
Use the exact station names in the search: Milano Centrale, Milano Cadorna, Varenna Esino, Como S. Giovanni or Como Lago. Centrale and Cadorna are different Milan terminals; Como Lago and San Giovanni are different Como stations. A hotel transfer or boat crossing begins after the rail journey.

From Milano Centrale to Varenna, then Bellagio
Trenord describes the direct Centrale–Varenna journey as about 64 minutes. Search for Varenna Esino rather than a generic lake destination. Use the dated result to confirm that your departure is direct: works or service changes can replace the normal pattern.
On the RE8 corridor, Trenord identifies Varenna Esino as a short-platform station. Follow its carriage and alighting instructions before departure, rather than settling automatically in the last carriage. Keep luggage manageable for the station-to-waterfront leg.
For Bellagio, leave the station, walk down to the Navigazione Laghi landing and take the appropriate sailing. Allow a separate transfer margin for the walk, ticket queue and boarding. On the return, reverse the sequence and allow for the uphill station walk. A train ticket to Varenna does not include the boat, and a fast train to Varenna is not a guarantee of an immediate Bellagio connection.
Trenord: RE8 line and Varenna short-platform instructionsFrom Centrale to Como San Giovanni
Choose Como S. Giovanni if you are starting at Centrale and visiting Como city. Trenord quotes about 40 minutes for the direct route; other services or a different Milan departure station can take longer. Compare the full dated journey rather than assuming every train with Como in its destination takes 40 minutes.
San Giovanni is not the waterfront terminal. Continue on foot or by suitable local transport to your accommodation or boat landing. This route works well for a Como city day, but does not put you in Bellagio or beside Villa del Balbianello. A cross-lake or up-lake journey remains a separate planning step.
Trenord: Centrale–Como S. Giovanni route and fareFrom Cadorna to Como Lago
Como Lago is the terminus near Como’s waterfront. Trenord quotes about 60 minutes from Milano Cadorna without a change. This can be the simpler overall journey if your Milan room is near Cadorna or your first Como stop is by the lake, even though its quoted rail time is longer than the direct Centrale–San Giovanni service.
Board at Cadorna, not Centrale. The route uses the Saronno corridor; buying a Como Lago ticket does not mean the train departs from Milan’s main intercity terminal. When comparing options, include the trip from your room to the correct Milan station and the walk at the Como end.
Trenord: Cadorna–Como Lago route and fareTickets, costs and validation
Trenord’s route pages checked on 25 October 2026 advertise second-class singles from €5.40 for Centrale–Como S. Giovanni and from €5.40 for Cadorna–Como Lago. These are operator-published starting fares, not a quote for every traveller or a price for Varenna. Obtain the Varenna fare from the exact origin-and-destination search rather than copying a Como fare.
Buy through Trenord’s website, app, ticket machines or authorised outlets. The ordinary regional ticket is not a reserved high-speed seat. Keep any Milan urban travel, the return railway journey and the onward boat or bus as separate budget lines unless the named product explicitly includes them. A short Milan metro ticket does not cover the full trip to Como or Varenna.
Trenord says its ordinary single digital rail ticket is valid on the chosen day for six hours from the selected time and needs no station validation. To travel earlier on that day, use Activate early; the six-hour period then starts immediately. Reloadable tickets require a tap at a validator or turnstile before boarding. Follow the rules for the actual ticket medium and seller: these Trenord instructions are not a universal rule for every ticket bought from another railway.
Trenord: ticket media, six-hour validity and activationMake the train and boat a complete outward journey
For a Bellagio day, search the outward train to Varenna and a boat after it, then build the return in the opposite order. Give the ferry queue its own time instead of treating the published train arrival as the boat boarding time. Navigazione Laghi recommends arriving at its ticket office about 20 minutes before departure and warns of summer and holiday queues.
For Menaggio or Tremezzina, select the actual arrival port and check the final walk or road connection to the property. Do not assume all central-lake sailings call at every villa. With luggage, arriving at your accommodation before sightseeing is generally more practical than carrying cases through a garden visit.
The Como boat page currently links a timetable for 5 October–1 November 2026. That document does not establish departures after 1 November, even if a winter notice for another lake appears elsewhere on the site. Choose a date-specific Como journey and allow for weather suspensions; this guide does not certify a particular future train-to-boat connection.
Navigazione Laghi: valid timetable dates, queues and weather adviceDay trip, overnight stay and return to Milan
For a first central-lake day, use Varenna as the railway gateway, add Bellagio if the boats fit, and return through Varenna. For a city-focused day with fewer transfers, take a Como train and spend the time in Como. These are different outings rather than slower and faster versions of the same visit.
If staying overnight, book the final arrival to the room as carefully as the railway. Bellagio and the western-shore towns need more than a rail ticket. A late train arrival can be unsuitable when the necessary onward boat has already finished. For the return to Milan, select a boat and train combination with recovery time rather than pairing the last departure of each mode.
Use the Trenord app or dated journey search for engineering works, cancellations and the actual departure station. Generic route pages describe normal journey times; they are not live service guarantees. Plan the lake visit first, then choose the ticket and departure that deliver that plan.
