Where to go in Le Marche
For a first visit, choose a northern art trip around Urbino or a central coast trip around Conero. Combine both only if you have time for a change of base. Pesaro and Ancona are useful rail gateways, but neither puts every inland town or beach on a direct train. A short stay works better with one area than with a different hill town every day.
Urbino suits travellers who want the Palazzo Ducale and a compact historic centre. Sirolo suits a stay above the sea with trips down to the beaches. Numana puts more emphasis on its harbour and lower waterfront. Frasassi, inland near Genga, is a separate cave excursion rather than another beach stop.

| Your decision | Base | Best reason to choose it | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern art trip | Urbino | Palazzo Ducale and time in the old town after day visitors leave | Bus or road arrival; not a mainline railway base |
| Rail-first northern stay | Pesaro | Arrive by train and use the Urbino bus link for a day out | The Urbino transfer uses part of both ends of the day |
| Coast and village evenings | Sirolo or Numana | Conero beaches with dinner near your accommodation | Beach gradients and bus calendars matter; there is no railway station in either centre |
| Central transport base | Ancona | Rail arrival, a city stay and onward buses towards Conero | You commute to the resort beaches rather than sleep beside them |
Getting to Urbino: use Pesaro, then the bus
Trenitalia sells Urbino Link as a train-and-bus journey through Pesaro. Select Urbino as the destination, rather than buying a train ticket to Pesaro and assuming the last leg is included. The bus leaves from the square outside Pesaro station. Trenitalia currently lists a €3.90 one-way bus component, added to the rail fare, with separate transport contracts for the train and bus.
Adriabus publishes the actual service calendar. Its current winter timetable is valid from 14 September 2026 to 5 June 2027; the extraurban booklet was revised on 22 October. Select the Pesaro-to-Urbino and return pages, including their weekday, school-day and holiday notes. A historic announcement of a half-hourly link is not a timetable for every day of your trip.

For Sirolo, Numana and Marcelli, plan a road connection after the train. RENI publishes the Ancona–Camerano–Sirolo–Numana–Marcelli corridor, with separate working-day and Sunday/public-holiday winter timetables running into June 2027. The holiday sheet lists dates when its service does not run, including 1 November 2026. Do not treat a coastal railway ticket as a completed journey to your accommodation.
Ancona is the straightforward rail gateway to investigate for this cluster. Before choosing a late train, match its arrival to the actual bus at Ancona Stazione, then identify the final village stop. A rental car makes scattered inland stops easier, but it does not remove beach access restrictions or make driving into historic centres advisable.
RENI: dated winter routes and timetablesHow long to allow: two useful short routes
For three nights without a car, stay in Pesaro and give Urbino one full day, leaving another day for Pesaro itself. This is the simpler northern choice when you do not want to move hotels for one museum visit. Sleep in Urbino instead if its historic centre is the main purpose of the trip and you prefer a slower visit.
For four nights on the central coast, stay in Sirolo or Numana. Allow an arrival day, one local beach day, a second day for another beach or a village walk, and a spare day that can absorb poor sea conditions. These are editorial pacing suggestions, not a purchased itinerary.
With six nights, a practical split is two in Urbino and four on the Conero coast. Treat the move between them as a transfer day through the coastal transport network, not as an uninterrupted beach day. Do not add Frasassi to that same transfer unless the actual train connections and cave admission time fit.
Where Frasassi fits
Choose Frasassi when you want a substantial indoor visit inland rather than another coastal resort. The regional tourism authority places the caves near Genga and identifies Genga–San Vittore Terme station on the Ancona–Rome line as the rail access point. The station is not the cave entrance: include the final approach and the cave check-in in the day plan.
The standard tourist route and the speleological adventure routes are different visits. Start with the ordinary guided tourist route for a first cave visit; do not book an adventure route merely because a shorter or cheaper ticket appears elsewhere. For a short Marche holiday, replace a coast day with Frasassi rather than adding it to an already full Urbino day.
Marche tourism: Frasassi location and visit typesWhen to go, and what to reserve first
For an art-led trip, build the week around the Palazzo Ducale opening day before buying onward transport: the normal schedule is Tuesday to Sunday, with Monday closed. Summer Monday openings are dated exceptions, not a year-round rule.
For a coast-led trip, separate the summer beach programme from an autumn or winter village stay. Sirolo tourism describes the Due Sorelle passenger boats as a summer service, and the municipality’s 2026 beach-reservation period ended on 13 September. Neither establishes next summer’s rules or a boat departure in October. Confirm the season-specific product before making that beach the reason for a short stay.
National museums: Palazzo Ducale hoursConnect Marche with the rest of Italy
Marche works as an Adriatic extension of an Emilia-Romagna trip, but give it its own nights rather than promising Urbino as a quick extra after a full Bologna sightseeing day. Compare a northern city-and-food trip with a coast-and-art stay before committing to both. For a wider Italy itinerary, use the national planning guide to decide which regional stop this replaces.
