Conero travel guide: Sirolo, Numana and beach access

Compare Sirolo, Numana, Marcelli and Portonovo, plan the bus from Ancona, and understand why Due Sorelle needs a sea journey rather than a walk down Passo del Lupo.

Where to stay on the Conero Riviera

Choose Sirolo if you want a village centre above the sea and are comfortable with the descent to the beaches. Choose Numana if the harbour and lower waterfront matter more. Marcelli is the more straightforward choice to investigate for accommodation near a long beachfront, while Portonovo is a separate bay below the northern side of Monte Conero rather than another name for Sirolo.

For a first coast stay, allow three or four nights in one place. That gives you time for local beaches without making a single boat excursion carry the whole trip. Ancona works as a rail-arrival city base, but a beach day from there includes the onward road journey and the return timetable.

Arrive by train, then RENI bus

Sirolo and Numana are not railway-station arrivals. RENI’s route joins Ancona, Camerano, Sirolo, Numana and Marcelli, with some working-day journeys continuing towards Porto Recanati. For a train-first trip, start by comparing Ancona Stazione with the onward bus and your final village stop.

The operator’s current working-day timetable runs from 14 September 2026 to 5 June 2027; its separate Sunday/public-holiday sheet starts on 20 September. Working-day pages include school-day and Saturday restrictions, so a row of departures is not a promise that every bus runs on every weekday. Do not use the expired summer 2026 sheet for an autumn journey.

A Sunday bus day has a very different shape

The winter Sunday/public-holiday sheet lists Ancona Stazione departures at 09:05, 12:05 and 19:05 towards Sirolo. It shows arrival at Sirolo Via Cilea at 09:35, 12:35 and 19:35. In the return direction, the Sirolo Via Peschiera–Via Cilea row has 08:17, 11:17 and 18:07, reaching Ancona Stazione at 08:55, 11:55 and 18:45.

These are timetable examples from the sheet valid to 5 June 2027, not guaranteed departures despite disruption. The sheet explicitly excludes 1 November 2026, 8, 25 and 26 December 2026, and several 2027 holidays. In particular, do not plan a 1 November day trip around its Sunday buses. For a normal operating Sunday, the morning outward bus and early-evening return permit a longer village day; the midday outward bus leaves much less flexibility.

Choose a local beach before adding Due Sorelle

Start with the beaches below your chosen base rather than organising every day around the most photographed cove. From Sirolo, compare Urbani with San Michele and Sassi Neri; make the descent and return part of the outing. From Numana or Marcelli, a stay near the lower waterfront can remove some of that daily uphill travel.

A room labelled Sirolo does not guarantee easy beach access, and a shorefront room does not guarantee sand, shade or a lifeguard in every season. If avoiding stairs is essential, ask about the exact route between that address and the particular beach entrance. Do not infer accessibility from a short straight-line distance.

Due Sorelle: sea access, not a path down the cliff

Sirolo’s municipal tourism site states that Due Sorelle is accessible only by sea and that transit via Passo del Lupo to the beach is forbidden. A walk to a viewpoint is not permission to continue downhill to the shore. Do not attempt that descent as a way around a sold-out boat.

The tourism site describes a summer passenger-boat service from Numana, Marcelli and San Michele in Sirolo, with advance online booking. It does not establish an October sailing or a guaranteed departure in unsuitable sea conditions. For an ordinary first visit, a booked passenger boat is the option to investigate; independent canoe or SUP access is not an interchangeable fallback for inexperienced paddlers.

Beach booking: the 2026 rule had an end date

Sirolo’s 2026 notice required Due Sorelle beach reservations from 1 July through 13 September. It also stated that Traghettatori del Conero reserved places for its own passengers, rather than requiring them to make a separate beach booking. Those are the published rules for that named period and operator, not a permanent exemption for all boats.

The reservation period has ended. That does not prove that a passenger boat is running now, that every landing is authorised, or that the same system will apply in 2027. For a future summer trip, use the new municipal notice when issued rather than reserving around this expired date range.

A short stay without rushing between bays

On arrival, settle into Sirolo or Numana and walk the village rather than promising a boat connection after a long train journey. Give the next day to a nearby beach. Use another day for a second beach or a pre-booked Due Sorelle boat only when the seasonal service and conditions support it. Keep a spare morning for a village walk or a delayed excursion.

In autumn and winter, book this as a village-and-coast stay rather than assuming a summer resort programme. Do not make an unconfirmed boat the centrepiece. If your main interest is painting and historic buildings, Urbino may be a better use of those nights than a coast stay outside the beach season.
