Orvieto travel guide: cathedral, one-day route and where to stay

Plan Orvieto’s cathedral and St Patrick’s Well, choose the hilltop or station area, and use the replacement bus while the funicular suspension remains posted.

How long do you need in Orvieto?

Give Orvieto one full day for the cathedral, the old town and St Patrick’s Well. Stay overnight if you want a slower cathedral visit, archaeological collections or a separate underground tour. The hilltop centre is the better base for an evening walk and dinner; Orvieto Scalo is more practical for a very early train but requires an uphill transfer for sightseeing.

A short stop works best when you choose the cathedral plus one other paid visit. The Duomo’s underground rooms, St Patrick’s Well and other cave tours are different attractions. Buying one ticket does not automatically cover the others.

Arriving by train: plan for the replacement bus

Book to Orvieto railway station, below the historic centre, rather than assuming the train arrives beside the Duomo. The city’s visitor information identifies the station on the Rome–Florence corridor. Compare the actual dated rail results and their named Rome or Florence station; this guide does not promise a fixed journey time or a direct departure every hour.

On 26 October 2026, Busitalia’s alternative-mobility page still links its funicular suspension notice. That notice says the funicular is suspended until maintenance finishes and provides replacement buses between Piazza Matteotti, at the railway station, and Piazza Cahen. Plan to use that bus rather than promising yourself a funicular ride. No reopening date is stated there.

The replacement notice gives a first weekday departure at 07:10, then departures every 10 minutes from 07:30 to 20:30; Sundays and public holidays run every 15 minutes from 08:00 to 20:30. These are the operator’s posted replacement-service hours, not a guarantee against disruption. Busitalia’s general mobility page lists a €1.30 single ticket valid for 90 minutes and usable on Orvieto urban services. From Piazza Cahen, continue on foot along the upper town or use the local connection towards Piazza Duomo.

A one-day walking route from Piazza Cahen

Start at Piazza Cahen. If you want to enter St Patrick’s Well, do it here before walking into the centre; it saves returning across town just for that visit. Allow roughly 45 minutes as an editorial allowance for the stairs and a pause, with more time if there is a queue. The nearby Albornoz fortress gardens provide a shorter outdoor alternative.

Continue along Corso Cavour and turn towards Piazza Duomo for the cathedral and San Brizio Chapel. Give this your main interior-visiting block rather than a rushed photograph between cave bookings. On Sundays and holy days, use the afternoon cathedral window described below and reverse the morning order.

After lunch, return towards Torre del Moro and Piazza del Popolo, then walk to Piazza della Repubblica and Sant’Andrea. Continue towards the western medieval quarter around San Giovenale if your legs and daylight allow. Choose an archaeological museum instead if you prefer another interior. Leave enough time to get back to Piazza Cahen, descend to the station and reach your platform; a booked train is a poor reason to rush the well’s stairs.

Duomo tickets: what €8 actually includes

The standard €8 Duomo ticket includes the cathedral, the San Brizio Chapel, Museo Emilio Greco and the cathedral’s underground rooms, with an audioguide. The €11 combination adds the Claudio Faina Etruscan Museum. Choose the latter if you will actually use that museum; a cathedral-focused visit does not need a larger sightseeing basket. The ticket office is at Piazza Duomo 25, opposite the cathedral, and the Opera del Duomo also sells online.

The official schedule lists ordinary October hours of 09:30–19:00 and November–February hours of 09:30–17:00. Sundays and holy days have separate visiting windows: November–February 10:00–11:00 and 13:00–16:30; March–October 10:00–11:00 and 13:00–17:30. Do not apply the ordinary all-day hours to a Sunday. Tourist visits pause during relevant liturgical celebrations.

The cathedral FAQ says children through age 10 enter free, with payment from the eleventh birthday. Other concessions require the relevant proof. The €8 and €11 figures are the official published products checked on 26 October 2026, not live availability for a particular time slot.

St Patrick’s Well: choose it for the staircase

Pozzo di San Patrizio is beside the eastern arrival area, at Piazza Cahen 5B. CoopCulture describes a 54-metre-deep well reached by descending 248 steps. You must also make the climb out, so this is not a step-free substitute for a museum and is a poor choice if repeated stairs are the problem.

The operator lists €6 standard admission, October hours of 09:00–19:00 and November–February hours of 10:00–17:00. Do not use the summer 20:00 finish for a winter afternoon. The well is separate from the cathedral admission; for a shorter visit, choose the well or a cave tour rather than treating every underground attraction as essential.

Driving in: choose the car park before the hotel door

Piazza della Pace is the station-side parking option below the cliff; the city’s visitor page lists free parking for cars there, followed by the uphill public-transport stage. Campo della Fiera is on the west side, with lift and escalator approaches towards the old town. Via Roma is on the plateau, with a walk towards Corso Cavour. Choose among them using the accommodation address and which end of town you will visit first.

A central room is not permission to drive through restricted streets. Obtain the property’s exact authorised approach and any plate-registration instructions before entering a controlled zone. If you cannot establish permission, use a signed visitor car park and walk. Leave luggage at your accommodation when possible rather than building a sightseeing day around bags in the car.

Add another Umbrian stop only if you have the time

Perugia suits a longer art-and-city stay; Assisi suits a church-focused visit with its own hills and station transfer. Neither should be squeezed into the remaining hours of this Orvieto day. For a short rail trip, keep Orvieto as one deliberate stop. For a driving circuit, combine it with Todi and an Assisi base, then give Perugia a separate visiting block.
