Lake Garda travel guide: towns, transport and how long to stay
For a short Lake Garda trip by train, start with Peschiera or Desenzano on the southern shore. Choose Malcesine or Riva for a northern-lake stay, and plan the onward road transfer rather than assuming a train or year-round boat reaches your hotel.
Which part of Lake Garda should you visit?
Choose the south for the easiest rail arrival and a short visit combining a lakeside town with Sirmione. Choose the north if the mountain setting and several days around Riva, Torbole or Malcesine are the point of the holiday. For a single day from Verona, stay in one part of the lake rather than attempting a circuit. Lake Garda crosses Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino. Peschiera, Lazise, Bardolino and Malcesine are on the Veneto side; Desenzano and Sirmione are in Lombardy, and Riva is in Trentino. This guide covers the whole lake. A regional boundary is less useful for planning than your actual arrival station, shore and return connection.
VisitGarda: rail gateways for the southern and northern lakeMatch the town to the trip
Scroll sideways to compare every column.
| Compare | Best use | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Peschiera del Garda | Southern rail gateway, fortified centre and onward eastern-shore travel | The station is not the same place as a hotel further up the lake |
| Desenzano del Garda | Rail arrival, town evenings and access towards Sirmione or the western shore | Include the station-to-waterfront or accommodation transfer |
| Sirmione | Castle, Roman villa remains and a peninsula-focused visit | No railway station; the old town is at the end of a narrow peninsula |
| Lazise, Bardolino or Garda town | Eastern-shore lakeside days with neighbouring towns | Require an onward bus, taxi or seasonal boat from the railway |
| Malcesine | A northern eastern-shore stay beneath Monte Baldo | A separate road transfer; mountain activities need their own access and weather checks |
| Riva del Garda or Torbole | Northern-lake days and an outdoor-focused stay | Use Rovereto as a rail gateway, not as a lakeside arrival |
Getting to Lake Garda by train
The southern railway gateways are Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda, on the Milan–Venice corridor. Search the exact station name when comparing a dated train from Verona, Venice or Milan. Not every high-speed service stops at both stations; a regional train can be the more useful option. For Riva and Torbole, compare a train to Rovereto followed by a bus or taxi with an arrival through the southern lake. Rovereto is inland. Book the complete transfer rather than treating the rail arrival as the end of the journey. Sirmione has no railway station: its tourism office directs passengers to Desenzano or Peschiera, followed by bus or taxi.
Visit Sirmione: stations, bus links and road accessThe winter boat timetable does not mean boats run all winter
Navigazione Laghi labels its timetable bundle 5 October 2026 to 25 March 2027, but the passenger-boat PDF has a crucial restriction. The Desenzano–Peschiera–Riva timetable applies from 5 October to 1 November 2026 and again from 13 to 25 March 2027. From 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027, it says the only operating service is the Torri–Maderno ferry. That cross-lake ferry is not a substitute for a boat from Desenzano to Sirmione or from Malcesine to Riva. For a November–February visit, build the trip around towns reachable by road, and do not book a hotel assuming a passenger-boat link will operate. The municipality of Riva separately confirms that the Maderno–Torri vehicle ferry continues through the winter timetable period except 25 December 2026. When passenger boats are running, read each sailing’s date notes and both directions before choosing a day trip. A port appearing in the timetable is not a promise of a convenient return at any hour. Boats may be suspended in bad weather or strong waves; leave room between a lake outing and an onward reserved train.
Navigazione Laghi: actual passenger-boat operating dates and winter exceptionWhat to do in Sirmione and the southern lake
For a first southern-lake day, choose Sirmione’s historic centre and castle area, then continue along the peninsula towards the Grotte di Catullo if Roman archaeology interests you. The Grotte are the remains of a Roman villa, not a cave tour. Add the lakeside walk towards Lido delle Bionde rather than trying to include several distant towns. Peschiera is useful for a walk around the fortified centre and waterways before or after the train. Desenzano works for a waterfront and town day with an evening meal close to your overnight base. For a short stay, these are alternatives to a long northbound journey, not minor stops to fit before it. Keep admission tickets for the castle or archaeological site separate from transport; no lake-wide sightseeing bundle is assumed here.
VisitGarda: Sirmione’s peninsula, castle and Roman villaWhen a northern-lake stay is worth the extra transfer
Malcesine puts you on the eastern side beneath Monte Baldo; Riva and Torbole suit a stay concentrated at the northern end. Use their centres and lakefronts as the basis of the visit, then book any sailing, cycling or mountain activity for its actual season and requirements. A town guide does not establish that a particular lift, trail or water-sports session is operating. Choose a northern base for several days there, not because it looks close to Peschiera on a small map. The roads follow the shore and buses or boats serve specific stopping patterns. If you have only one lake day between Venice and Verona, the southern shore usually makes a more manageable editorial choice.
VisitGarda: northern, eastern and western shore geographyA practical three-day southern-lake stay
This is our pacing suggestion, not a packaged itinerary. Spend two nights in Peschiera or Desenzano if you want to arrive and leave by train without another hotel change. Day 1: arrive, leave luggage at your accommodation and explore your base. In Peschiera, focus on the fortified centre and waterside streets; in Desenzano, use the town and waterfront. Avoid a pre-paid distant attraction immediately after arrival. Day 2: give Sirmione the main sightseeing day. Travel by the actual bus or taxi connection, or by a passenger boat only during its operating dates. Walk the old town and peninsula; choose the castle or Roman villa as the main paid stop if you want a less rushed visit. Return to the same base. Day 3: take a slower morning by the lake before your onward train. If departure is late, use another part of your base rather than adding Malcesine or Riva just to claim the whole lake. For a northern holiday, instead spend those two nights in Riva or Malcesine and allow arrival and departure time for the road transfer.
Season, costs and getting around
For a boat-led trip, select dates from the published operating timetable, not simply the words spring or autumn. Summer and holiday periods bring queues at ticket offices and busy shore roads. Navigazione Laghi recommends arriving at its ticket office about 20 minutes before departure; that is a boarding-planning allowance, not a guarantee against queues. A car can help with dispersed accommodation or a wider countryside route, but parking and traffic remain part of each town visit. A short southern-lake stay is possible without one when your accommodation and chosen outings match the rail and bus connections. Budget separately for intercity trains, local buses or taxis, each boat trip and attraction admissions. Fast boat services can carry a supplement; do not assume an ordinary fare covers every sailing. For wheelchair travel, the operator asks passengers to confirm the vessel and boarding facilities with its service team on +39 030 9149511. Ships may be substituted, so an accessible waterfront or a general fleet description does not establish access on the particular sailing.
