Where to stay in Lake Garda: choose the right town and area

Stay in Peschiera or Desenzano for a short trip by train, Sirmione for evenings on the peninsula, or Malcesine and Riva for a longer northern-lake holiday. The exact hotel address matters as much as the town: a station, harbour and hillside apartment can involve very different arrivals.

The best Lake Garda base for your trip

For two or three nights without a car, our first choices are Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda. Both have railway stations, so you can keep the lake stay between larger city stops without committing to a long shore transfer. Peschiera suits an eastern-shore plan; Desenzano suits a western-shore or Sirmione plan. Neither means you can step off the train directly into every waterfront hotel. For a holiday centred on the lake itself, choose the town where you want to spend the evenings. Sirmione rewards staying after a peninsula sightseeing day; Bardolino and Garda town suit an eastern-shore stay; Malcesine, Riva and Torbole put you closer to the northern landscape and water-sports areas. Do not choose a northern hotel mainly to commute south every morning.

Peschiera or Desenzano: the simplest short stays

In Peschiera, choose accommodation near the station if an early departure and luggage handling are the priority. Choose the fortified centre if the point is to walk out for dinner and explore the waterways. Before choosing a campsite or apartment described as Peschiera, map its actual entrance against the station and your intended bus stop; the town name does not establish a convenient walk. In Desenzano, favour the town and harbour area for evenings on foot. If you choose a station-side room for onward travel, treat the lakefront as a separate walk or transfer. This is a practical alternative to Sirmione for travellers who want to visit the peninsula but retain a railway base. For either town, a one-base stay is usually more useful than changing hotels to the opposite southern shore after one night. These are editorial location choices, not claims that one town has cheaper rooms or better availability.

Sirmione: old town versus Colombare and Lugana

Choose the historic centre if you want the castle, old streets and peninsula walks to be the focus of the stay. Choose Colombare or Lugana if you prefer accommodation on the mainland side and are content to make a separate journey to the old town. A listing with Sirmione in its address is not necessarily within a short walk of the castle. There is no Sirmione railway station. The official visitor information directs rail travellers to Desenzano or Peschiera, then bus or taxi. The station name Desenzano del Garda–Sirmione does not mean the train stops on the peninsula. The historic centre has restricted traffic access. For a hotel inside it, obtain the property’s exact arrival and vehicle-registration instructions before driving through a controlled gate; a reservation alone is not permission. The tourism office confirms that taxis can enter the historic centre to reach booked accommodation, which may be a more useful arrival choice with luggage.

Bardolino and Garda town: stay on the eastern shore

Bardolino and Garda town suit travellers who want to spend most of the holiday along this stretch of shore rather than beside a railway station. Aim for a room that lets you reach the centre, waterfront and bus stop on foot; an outlying property changes the trip even when it has a lake view. Garda town is a particular place, not another name for the entire lake. ATV’s winter line 164 timetable, in force from 10 September 2026, connects Peschiera railway station with Lazise, Bardolino and Garda. It has separate weekday and Sunday/holiday patterns; some holiday journeys have a narrower seasonal validity. Use the dated service column rather than assuming every printed bus runs daily. For a visit focused on Malcesine or Riva, choose a northern base instead of treating Bardolino as equally convenient for every part of the lake.

Malcesine, Riva and Torbole: book for the northern lake

Choose central Malcesine for a holiday based around the old town and eastern northern shore. Val di Sogno, Cassone and Navene appear separately in the bus timetable: they are not interchangeable with a room in the centre. For a hillside address, establish the actual walking route and luggage transfer rather than judging by straight-line distance. Riva and Torbole suit a holiday concentrated at the north end, particularly if sailing or other outdoor activities are a main reason to visit. Rovereto is the rail gateway identified by VisitGarda; the onward road journey remains part of arrival. ATV line 484 also links Garda, Malcesine, Torbole and Riva, with seasonal and day-of-week conditions. A northern base does not establish that a particular lift, trail or water-sports course is operating. Select those separately for the travel dates. Our suggested allocation is at least three nights if arrival and departure both require substantial transfers, rather than spending one of two days travelling the length of the lake.

Salò and Gardone Riviera: choose the western shore deliberately

Salò and Gardone Riviera are useful alternatives when you want a stay concentrated on the western shore. VisitGarda identifies Desenzano as a railway gateway for these towns. Book the road connection and accommodation together; neither town is a station on the southern rail line. For a car-based stay, a room with clear parking arrangements may be more useful than the most central address. For a stay without a car, favour a location close to the town facilities and the stop used by your actual bus. Do not plan daily cross-lake outings merely because two harbours face each other on a map.

Where to stay in winter, with children or with limited mobility

For a winter visit that depends on public transport, start with Peschiera or Desenzano and qualify any onward bus before booking elsewhere. Navigazione Laghi states that from 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 its only running service is the Torri–Maderno ferry. That is a cross-lake crossing, not a passenger-boat network connecting all these bases. With children, a central apartment or room close to meals and your intended transport can avoid repeated car or bus journeys. Do not assume a property near the lake has a beach suitable for your family, an enclosed play area or a cot: those are accommodation-specific features. For a wheelchair or pushchair, compare the complete station-to-room route, building entrance and lift, not just a waterfront photograph. A lake-facing hillside property can be a poor match even in an otherwise suitable town. For boat travel, the operator’s passenger timetable directs wheelchair users to its service team on +39 030 9149511 to confirm boarding facilities for the actual vessel.
