Florence to Rome by train: Termini or Tiburtina, tickets and arrival

Search Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Roma Termini for a central Rome arrival. Compare Tiburtina only if it better suits your destination, and treat a Fiumicino airport connection as a separate journey.

The useful station pair for most visitors

Book from Firenze S. M. Novella, abbreviated SMN, to Roma Termini if your Rome plan is built around the main central station. Italo’s Florence–Rome route also lists Roma Tiburtina. Read the arrival station on each result: Rome is not one interchangeable stop, and a small rail saving can disappear in the onward journey. Compare direct high-speed trains with Italo and Trenitalia before choosing.

Journey time and price

Italo advertises 1 hour 25 minutes and fares from €14.90 for this route. It also says the journey time depends on the date, time and day of the week. Neither figure is a live quote for your chosen departure. Use the actual result’s total duration, arrival station, transfer count and fare for your party. Do not select a connecting or slower service simply because it appears under the same city pair.

Which Rome arrival works for you?

Termini is the straightforward target for a hotel near Termini and for the Leonardo express airport connection. Tiburtina may suit a destination nearer that station. For the Pantheon/Navona area, Trastevere, Monti or Prati, neither station name alone solves the final leg: compare the route to the exact hotel entrance with luggage. Avoid booking Tiburtina while relying on a plan written for Termini.

If Rome is the end of your holiday

An arrival at Roma Termini is not an arrival at Fiumicino Airport. Leonardo express provides the separate non-stop Termini–Fiumicino rail leg, scheduled at 32 minutes, with departures advertised every 15 minutes. Add the station transfer, waiting, the airport walk and your airline’s check-in requirements. An early flight is a reason to compare an overnight in Rome, not to connect the first Florence departure tightly to a flight.

Do you need a flexible ticket?

For a fixed Florence-to-hotel transfer, compare the cheapest useful direct service with a more changeable offer. For an airport connection, consider both the consequences of disruption and the fare rules; flexibility does not guarantee that a later train will get you to the flight. Trenitalia’s standard Super Economy conditions do not permit date/time changes or voluntary cancellation refunds. Its Economy fare permits a pre-departure date/time change by paying the difference to the applicable Base price, but no voluntary cancellation refund. Read any selected special offer separately.

Italo fares follow different rules

Italo Economy lists date/time changes until three minutes before departure with a 20% fee and any fare difference, plus a 40% cancellation refund. Flex lists an 80% cancellation refund, not a full refund. Its missed-train Extra Time arrangements require contacting staff and are subject to availability and applicable charges. A ticket labelled flexible is not permission to board any later departure on your own.

Leaving Florence with luggage

Check out, collect stored bags if needed, and reach the exact station printed on your ticket. A booking from SMN does not start at Campo di Marte or Rifredi. Find the train by its number and time; a service continuing beyond Rome can display a different final destination. Keep your ticket accessible and use the coach and seat information on the reservation. With an oversized suitcase, note Italo Smart’s published limit of 75 × 53 × 30 cm before paying.

Make arrival day workable

If you are staying in Rome, allow time to reach the hotel and leave bags before a walking route or timed attraction. The Navona–Pantheon–Trevi area works as a central walking sequence, while the Colosseum and Vatican need their own reservation and travel planning. Do not measure the gap to a booked entry from the train’s arrival time alone.

Return direction and ticket handling

For Rome to Florence, check the departure station again rather than reversing a city-only search. The ticket guide explains the distinction between reserved high-speed travel, automatically validated digital regional tickets and paper regional validation. Facts checked against official pages on 24 October 2026; individual departures, seats and disruption notices were not queried.
