Which Rome–Florence train should you book?
Start with a direct high-speed journey from Roma Termini to Firenze S. M. Novella, often abbreviated SMN. Italo lists this route and also serves Roma Tiburtina; Trenitalia is the other operator to compare. Prefer the departure station that fits your Rome address rather than selecting a cheaper result and discovering it leaves from the other station. For most visitors staying near Termini, a Termini departure avoids a separate cross-city transfer.
Official Italo route and station listHow long does the journey take?
Italo advertises 1 hour 25 minutes for Rome–Florence, with a qualification that the duration depends on the date, time and day of the week. Use that as a fast-service benchmark, not the duration of every result. Read the specific train’s arrival time and number of changes. Add your journey to the Rome station and the final walk or ride in Florence before deciding how much of the day remains. A direct train can stop en route without requiring a change.
Italo journey duration and qualificationsTermini or Tiburtina?
These are different Rome stations, not alternative names for the same terminal. Search Termini first if you are staying there or arriving on the Leonardo express from Fiumicino. Tiburtina can suit an address closer to that station, but compare the complete hotel-to-station journey. Do not assume every departure calls at both. Match the boarding station on the ticket to the one you actually plan to use.
Compare Rome areas and station accessWhat does a ticket cost?
The official Italo route page advertises tickets from €14.90. This is a starting-price claim, not a quote for your travel date, and it should not be doubled into a guaranteed return fare. Search the same date, station pair and time window with both operators. Compare the total for everyone travelling, then read the change and cancellation conditions of the selected offer. A low fare can be sensible for a fixed hotel-to-hotel transfer; it is less forgiving when your departure depends on a flight.
Official route and advertised starting fareChoose flexibility separately from the seat class
Italo Low Cost permits date/time changes up to 72 hours before departure with a 60% surcharge plus any fare difference. Economy permits changes up to three minutes before departure with a 20% fee plus the fare difference, and lists a 40% cancellation refund. These are fare rules, separate from choosing Smart, Prima or Club. Trenitalia uses its own Base, Economy and Super Economy conditions; the same word Economy does not mean the same product across operators.
Compare operators and fare conditionsIf you are coming straight from Fiumicino
Leonardo express connects Fiumicino Airport with Roma Termini in a scheduled 32 minutes. That is only the airport rail leg: immigration, bags, the walk to the airport station, waiting and the platform transfer at Termini come on top. Do not book the Florence train as though its connection starts at aircraft touchdown. Compare a later departure or a more changeable fare. If you buy separate tickets, do not assume the high-speed operator will treat a missed connection like a single protected itinerary.
Trenitalia: Leonardo expressAt the platform and on board
Use the departure time and train number, not just the final destination on the board: your train may continue beyond Florence. Have the booking code and ticket available, and match coach and seat details to the booking. Leave time to find the correct platform and handle your luggage. On Italo, Smart class excludes luggage larger than 75 × 53 × 30 cm according to the current route page; measure a large suitcase before selecting that class.
Italo route page: Smart luggage restrictionArriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella
SMN is the central search target for a Florence stay. Do not substitute Campo di Marte or Rifredi without planning the onward leg. A base near Santa Maria Novella makes luggage handling simpler; Santa Croce and Oltrarno require a longer final journey. Leave the first afternoon for check-in and a central walk rather than placing a non-refundable gallery slot immediately after the scheduled train arrival.
Choose a Florence baseTickets, validation and the return journey
High-speed reservations and regional tickets follow different rules. Use the Italy train-ticket guide for booking and validation, rather than applying regional advice to a reserved Italo or Frecciarossa journey. Operator route and fare pages checked on 24 October 2026; this guide does not verify seats, engineering works or the timetable of an individual departure.

The return direction needs its own arrival plan, particularly if you are continuing to an airport or staying away from Termini. Choose the Rome station before comparing the fare.
