Venice to Florence by train: stations, booking and arrival

For a historic-city departure, search Venezia Santa Lucia to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Choose a direct train and compare its actual running time and fare conditions before paying.

The simplest Venice–Florence train booking

Search Venezia S. Lucia to Firenze S. M. Novella and prefer a direct high-speed departure if its time and fare suit your day. Italo lists both stations on its Venice–Florence route, along with Venezia Mestre, Padova, Ferrara and Bologna Centrale. Those intermediate stops do not by themselves mean you must change trains: check the booking result for transfers. If you stay in Mestre, start the search there instead of making an unnecessary trip into the historic city.

Italo: Venice–Florence route and station list

How long does the train take?

Italo advertises a two-hour Venice–Florence journey on its route page, but also says travel time depends on date, time and day of week. Treat two hours as the operator’s headline, not a promise for every Santa Lucia departure. Read the duration, origin, arrival station and transfer count on your specific result. Allow additional time for the hotel-to-station journey in Venice and the station-to-hotel leg in Florence. No date-specific seat inventory or operating timetable was queried for this guide.

The journey in four steps

Venezia Santa LuciaFirenze Santa Maria Novella

  1. Before departure

    Reach Santa Lucia with luggage

Plan the walking route and stepped bridges from your hotel, or the waterbus stop and direction if using a boat. Santa Lucia is the historic-city rail terminus; Mestre is on the mainland. Leave enough margin for navigation and a platform check.

  2. At the station

Match the departure to your ticket

Use the train number and time on your booking to identify the platform. A through service may display a destination beyond Florence, so do not rely only on seeing Firenze on a board. Keep the ticket and booking reference available offline.

  3. On the train

    Stay on through intermediate stops

For a direct booking, intermediate stops such as Padova or Bologna are stops, not instructions to change. Follow the itinerary on your ticket and get off at the exact Florence station you booked.

  4. Florence arrival

Continue from Firenze S. M. Novella

For a central stay, compare the walk from Santa Maria Novella with the property’s entrance and check-in arrangements. Do not select Campo di Marte or Rifredi just because a booking site groups them under Florence if your plan assumes an SMN arrival.

Santa Lucia or Mestre: choose by where you slept

For San Marco, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and other historic-city stays, Santa Lucia usually avoids a separate local rail transfer before the main journey. From a Mestre hotel, Venezia Mestre may be the more practical boarding point. The operator’s route lists both stations, but your ticket must match where you intend to board. If your chosen result starts at Mestre, include the journey there explicitly instead of assuming you can take any earlier local train on the same ticket.

Price: compare a real quote, not the advertised minimum

The route page advertises fares from €18.90. That is a promotional floor, not a fare checked for your date, train or party. Search the actual departure before building a budget, and compare both the train time and fare restrictions. A direct journey that fits hotel check-out can be more useful than a cheaper departure requiring an early boat transfer or an extra rail change. This guide does not claim that the advertised minimum is available today.

Fare flexibility is separate from the seat class

Italo’s current fare page says Low Cost date/time changes cost 60% of the ticket price plus any fare difference and must be made at least 72 hours before departure. Economy allows date/time changes until three minutes before departure with a 20% fee plus any fare difference, and lists a 40% cancellation refund. These are distinct from choosing Smart, Prima or Club seating. Read the selected offer’s own conditions before paying, especially when an airport arrival or island excursion precedes the train.

Italo: Low Cost, Economy and Flex fare rules

Do you need a flexible fare?

A fixed Venice–Florence transfer after a hotel stay is easier to commit to than a train immediately after a flight or a lagoon outing. Flex may be worth comparing for an uncertain day: Italo lists an 80% cancellation refund and an Extra Time provision subject to availability. Flex is not a blanket fully refundable ticket, and missed-train arrangements are not permission to board any later service without contacting the operator. For Trenitalia alternatives, read that operator’s fare terms separately rather than transferring Italo’s rules to them.

Compare Italo with Trenitalia without mixing the rules

Check the same origin, arrival station and useful time window in both operators’ booking tools. Compare directness, total duration, price for your whole party and the selected fare’s change/refund rules. There is no need to select a rail pass solely for this one journey without calculating its cost against actual tickets and required reservations.

Luggage: check the class restriction before booking

Italo’s current route page says Smart class does not permit luggage larger than 75 × 53 × 30 cm, while listing different luggage conditions for Prima and Club. Measure a large suitcase before choosing the cheapest Smart offer. Regardless of allowance, you carry and store your own bags: a direct train does not remove station handling or Venice’s stepped-bridge problem.

Arrive at the Florence station that suits your stay

Firenze Santa Maria Novella is the useful central search target for this route. A hotel near the station limits arrival handling; a stay towards Santa Croce or across the Arno means a longer final leg. Check the exact hotel door, lift and reception hours before committing to an arrival just before check-in closes.

What to do with the rest of arrival day

Keep the first Florence afternoon for check-in and a central walk rather than a tightly timed gallery entry immediately after the scheduled train arrival. Use the Florence guide to choose between the Duomo area, Uffizi and an Oltrarno walk, then put your main reservation on a day with enough margin. Operator route and fare information checked on 24 October 2026; the running time and price of an individual departure remain booking-specific.
