Sorrento or Positano: which is the better base for your trip?

Choose Sorrento for rail day trips and easier upper-town walking. Choose Positano for beaches and evenings on the Amalfi Coast, accepting a steeper arrival and daily walking.

Sorrento or Positano: the short answer

Choose Sorrento if you want a first Campania base for Pompeii, Herculaneum and town walks, with a possible Capri crossing. Choose Positano if spending time in Positano itself, including evenings and beach visits, matters more than easy rail access. For a short stay with several different outings, Sorrento is usually the more practical choice. For a coast-focused break where the hotel, waterfront and town lanes are the main event, Positano justifies the extra arrival work. Neither removes the journey to the other, and neither is a substitute for a Naples city stay.

Arriving from Naples: one local train versus an extra transfer

For Sorrento, connect from the Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi complex to EAV’s Napoli–Sorrento service. The ordinary programme introduced on 17 October 2026 announces a half-hourly Sorrento service. That is a service pattern, not proof that every departure runs on a strike day. For Positano, a Sorrento train arrival is only the first part of the local journey. Add the coast bus or a suitable available sea connection, then the hotel approach. Alternatively compare arrival through Salerno and an onward coast connection. Choose the whole route before booking a late flight arrival or a room with a difficult luggage approach.

Pompeii and Herculaneum favour Sorrento

Sorrento’s railway corridor serves the relevant excavation stops: Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri for the Porta Marina side of Pompeii, and Ercolano Scavi for Herculaneum. Choose the actual stopping train, then give the excavation its own outing rather than adding it after a full coast day. From Positano, reaching that railway adds another leg in both directions. A paid excursion can remove some self-organised connections but needs its own comparison of meeting point, admission and guide inclusions. Positano is therefore a weak default if the archaeological sites are the main reason for this stay.

Positano wins when you want to stay in Positano after the day trip ends

A room in Positano lets you spend the evening around the lanes and waterfront without organising a return to Sorrento. Plan a town day around Santa Maria Assunta, Marina Grande and possibly MAR or Fornillo rather than leaving immediately on another excursion. If every day will be in Amalfi, Ravello or the eastern towns, widen the comparison to an Amalfi base. Positano’s appeal as an overnight choice does not make it the best connection point for every part of the coast.

Sorrento is easier on foot only if you book the right area

The upper-town route around Piazza Tasso, the old centre and the station is different from a stay at a marina or in the hills. Marina Piccola is the port-side area below the centre; Marina Grande is the separate fishing-village side. Choose an upper-town room if station access and central dinner walks are priorities. Positano’s height differences are more integral to a beach-and-town stay. In either place, inspect steps from the street to reception and from reception to the room. A hotel lift does not remove the public stairway outside. For a buggy or limited mobility, a verified property route matters more than declaring an entire town easy.

Do not decide on an assumed hotel-price gap

Positano and Sorrento each contain very different room categories and locations. Compare actual quotes for the same dates, occupancy, cancellation terms and view. No fixed percentage saving or typical nightly rate is assumed here. Add the transfers your plan creates. A Sorrento hotel followed by daily coast outings may cost more in transport than a coast room that initially looked dearer. Conversely, a Positano stay centred on excavation visits creates repeated extra connections. The cheaper option depends on the journeys you will actually make, not just the name of the town.

Late October 2026: use the right operator and timetable

SITA’s coastal PDF is valid 5 October–1 November 2026 and names separate Positano Sponda and Chiesa Nuova stops. Match the stop, direction and day code to your accommodation. Do not extend that grid into winter or copy departures from the older July diversion notice. The EAV strike notice for 30 October applies to its Vesuvian services, with guaranteed windows 05:30–08:30 and 16:30–19:30. If flexible, use that day for local town time rather than a rail excursion. These are EAV arrangements, not a statement that SITA or every ferry operator shares the same strike or guarantee.

One base or a split stay?

For three or four nights, keep one base and accept that you will not visit every town, island and excavation. Sorrento works for a town day and two separate outings. Positano works for a beach-and-town day plus a selected coast outing, without making rail archaeology the daily programme. For a longer trip that genuinely includes both kinds of stay, a split can make sense: complete rail outings from Sorrento, then move once for coast evenings. Do not change hotels simply to avoid one day-trip transfer; packing, checkout and the last climb to the new room use time too. These are editorial pacing choices rather than guaranteed itineraries.

If you choose the coast, compare more than Positano

Amalfi can be a better connection point for a varied coast stay. Compare its lower centre with the hilltop and eastern-town alternatives before booking.
