Which Cinque Terre base fits your trip?
For a first stay with children, beach plans or substantial luggage, start by comparing lower Fegina in Monterosso with central Levanto. Neither choice guarantees a step-free room, but both let you search around a broader seaside town setting rather than choosing a steep hillside address by default.
Choose Manarola, Vernazza or Riomaggiore when being in that village after the day visitors leave matters more than minimising the final luggage transfer. Choose Corniglia deliberately for the hilltop village, not because its station appears central on a rail map. La Spezia is the practical outside base when the longer-distance arrival, onward Tuscany route or station proximity wins the decision.
Stay in one place for the Cinque Terre portion. Changing rooms between villages usually adds more baggage handling than it saves in rail travel. A two- or three-night stay is a useful starting point for two visiting days, depending on arrival and departure times.

| Your decision | Choose it for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Monterosso: Fegina | Beach time and accommodation searches near the station/seafront | Upper streets can still involve steep climbs; verify the actual entrance |
| Monterosso: old town | Village lanes and evenings near the historic centre | The station is in the Fegina area; map the luggage approach |
| Vernazza | Harbour-side evenings in a small village | A harbour photograph says nothing about stairs to a hillside room |
| Manarola | A stay focused on Manarola rather than commuting back after dinner | Hillside addresses and upper lanes change luggage access |
| Riomaggiore | The easternmost village and a Via dell’Amore visit starting here | Steep village streets; do not confuse station proximity with harbour proximity |
| Corniglia | An elevated village without the same ferry-landing pattern | The station is below the centre; allow for the climb or confirmed road transfer |
| Levanto | A coastal town base west of the five villages | You commute into the village sequence rather than sleeping within it |
| La Spezia | Rail connections and a room near La Spezia Centrale | An urban gateway stay, not a Cinque Terre harbour overnight |
Monterosso: Fegina or the old town?
Fegina is the first area to examine for a beach-focused stay. Italia.it places the beach close to the railway station and distinguishes free sections from bathing-establishment areas. This makes it a useful family option, but says nothing about current beach-service prices, swimming conditions or a particular room’s accessibility.
The old town gives a different daily setting around narrow lanes and San Giovanni Battista. Choose it for that centre rather than assuming every Monterosso address has the same station walk. A hotel on the slopes above either quarter can undo the apparent convenience. Ask for the route from the station to the actual entrance, including outdoor steps and the room’s floor.

Vernazza is the better fit when its compact harbour setting is the main reason for staying. Manarola makes sense if you want to spend the late afternoon and evening in Manarola without scheduling a train back to another town. Neither is a sensible choice solely because the room photograph has the best sea view: that view may come with an uphill luggage carry.
For a short stay, prioritise a known entrance route over a distant hillside address with a village name. Establish whether the host meets arrivals, where a taxi can actually leave you, and whether there are stairs before the building’s lift. Quiet rooms, air conditioning and luggage storage are property-specific questions, not village-wide guarantees.
Cinque Terre National Park: Vernazza’s coastal village settingRiomaggiore or Corniglia: two very different arrivals
Riomaggiore is the easternmost village, useful if the rest of your journey approaches through La Spezia. Its streets climb between steep hills. Map the station, room and harbour separately: “central Riomaggiore” is not a promise of an easy last leg. The Via dell’Amore starts by the station for ordinary day visitors, but a stay in the village is not itself an admission ticket or permission to ignore reservations.
Corniglia sits about 100 metres above the sea. The park’s description gives the Lardarina staircase as 377 steps and notes a road alternative. If you cannot carry luggage up steps, establish the actual road transfer and its operating hours before committing to a room; this guide does not assume a shuttle is waiting for every train. Corniglia is also absent from the coastal operator’s four-village landing list. It suits a deliberate hilltop stay better than a boat-led itinerary.

Levanto is the western coastal gateway. Choose it when you want beach and town time in your base as well as village outings. Its tourism office describes a substantial bay, medieval centre and rail connection to the wider area. Keep the accommodation search around your intended station-to-town route; a rural address in the wider municipality is a different transport proposition.
La Spezia suits an arrival or onward journey on the eastern side and travellers who value a station-focused room over a village evening. Search specifically around La Spezia Centrale if trains are the priority. The boat departure is a separate last-leg decision, not the same location as the railway platform.
Do not assume La Spezia is always cheaper or a village is always poor value. Compare the actual room total for your dates, local train journeys, parking if needed and any late arrival transfer. No current hotel-rate comparison or inspected-property shortlist is claimed here.
Visit Levanto: town geography, beach and gateway roleWinter rail closures can outweigh the usual base advice
The park’s ticketing notice announces 48-hour rail suspensions between Corniglia and La Spezia on 14–15 November and 19–20 December 2026, 9–10 January and 6–7 February 2027. It also lists 22:30–06:30 interruptions between Levanto and La Spezia on the affected Friday and Saturday nights. These are not normal weekend timetables. Resolve the revised arrival and return in Trenitalia before paying for a room or an onward reserved train; no replacement-bus frequency is established by that notice.
A La Spezia room is normally useful for eastern arrivals, but not a guarantee of uninterrupted access to villages beyond a closed section. A Levanto or Monterosso room does not remove the need to resolve your own arrival and any journey across that section. The winter boat trip is an excursion with particular stops and weather limits, not a universal rail replacement.
Cinque Terre National Park: winter train suspensionsBefore paying: establish the complete luggage route
Ask the property for the station-to-door approach, number of external steps, room floor, lift access from street level and latest check-in. For a buggy or wheelchair, get confirmation for the exact route and room, then arrange rail assistance separately where needed. A beach described as easy to reach is not proof that the station, streets and accommodation form a step-free chain.
With a car, confirm where you are permitted to park overnight, the charge and whether the space is actually reserved. Do not plan routine driving between the five villages for the visit described here. With an early departure, favour a confirmed first transport connection rather than a view that depends on an uncertain transfer.
Once the room works, use it as the base for the whole village sequence. Reserve special access separately, keep a weather alternative and avoid changing hotels merely to tick another village name.
