Cinque Terre Card: train or trekking pass, prices and when it pays

Choose the Train Card for repeated regional journeys between La Spezia and Levanto, the Trekking Card for paid paths without unlimited trains, or single rail tickets for a short village visit. Both cards include Via dell’Amore access, but you still need its reservation.

Which Cinque Terre Card do you need?

The Cinque Terre Train Card, also called the Treno MS Card, adds unlimited second-class regional trains between La Spezia and Levanto to the park services. The Trekking Card covers the listed paths and services without those unlimited trains. Neither is compulsory just to enter the villages.

Start with the day’s actual journeys and walks. A return to one village can cost less on individual rail tickets. A day with several village stops and paid-trail access is a stronger candidate for the Train Card. Someone staying in a village and walking without repeated trains should compare the Trekking Card first. Boats, long-distance trains and travel beyond the covered railway stretch need separate arrangements.

2026 Train Card prices: match the date band

For adults aged 12–69, the park’s published Train Card tariff from 14 March to 1 November 2026 is €22 for one day in band A, €29.50 in band B and €35 in band C. Two days cost €36.50 / €51 / €61; three days cost €49 / €68 / €81 in A/B/C order. These are the published band tariffs, not a live quote for a chosen date.

The park separately publishes winter adult Train Card prices of €17.30 for one day, €29 for two days and €34 for three days, valid from 2 November to 31 December 2026. Do not extend that published end date into 2027 or compare a November card with October single fares.

The Trekking Card’s published adult one-day tariff is €10, or €15 on its high-attendance dates. Its calendar is separate from the three-band train table. Select the date in the official shop before paying; generic catalogue entries and accommodation discounts are not interchangeable with the ordinary dated retail product.

When is the Train Card worth it?

For daytime journeys within the special fare area from 14 March to 1 November 2026, Trenitalia lists adult single fares of €5 / €8 / €10 in bands A/B/C. A single ticket is for one direct journey, not unlimited hop-on travel during its 75-minute validity. The operator also lists a band-A evening fare from 19:30 to 04:00; use the actual departure when pricing an evening return.

For a rail-only day using daytime adult singles in one band, the Train Card first becomes cheaper at five journeys in A, four in B and four in C. Count the trip back to your base, but do not add sightseeing stops that you do not want simply to justify a pass.

If you would buy the Trekking Card anyway, compare its dated price plus your singles with the Train Card instead of comparing trains alone. For example, using the published €10 ordinary Trekking tariff and band-A €5 singles, three rail journeys bring the separate basket to €25, against the €22 Train Card. This is an illustrative same-day adult calculation, only applicable when the selected date actually has those tariffs.

Via dell’Amore is included, but a slot is still required

The park’s current FAQ says Via dell’Amore access is included in both card types. A reservation remains mandatory and depends on available places. Book the slot with the card if this walk matters to your trip; the park also allows booking it afterwards. Card ownership alone is not a timed-entry reservation.

The standard visitor direction is Riomaggiore towards Manarola. Fit the rest of the village day around that booked entry rather than arriving at the opposite end. Other coastal paths have separate opening conditions; a paid card does not establish that a route is open or suitable.

Buying, calendar-day validity and changes

Buy through the park’s official shop or station Infopoints, or through Trenitalia’s stated Train Card channels. Keep the exact product, start date, duration and traveller category visible before payment. A reseller’s guided excursion can include a card, but the excursion price is not the official card tariff and may not include your arrival train.

Cards are personal and non-transferable; carry identification. The park accepts an online card on an electronic device without printing. Validity ends at midnight on the last stated day, regardless of first use: a one-day card first used after lunch does not last until the following afternoon.

The park FAQ permits one online date change at least 24 hours before use, within the same price band. Cards are normally non-refundable, with specific exceptions in the regulations for defined alerts, force majeure and relevant strikes. Uncertain weather or using only part of a multi-day card does not automatically qualify. If staying at a CETS participating property, ask for its eligible guest arrangement before buying the ordinary retail card; not every room in the area carries that benefit.

Winter rail closures can matter more than the pass price

The park shop announces 48-hour train suspensions between Corniglia and La Spezia on 14–15 November and 19–20 December 2026, and 9–10 January and 6–7 February 2027. It also lists 22:30–06:30 interruptions between Levanto and La Spezia on the affected Friday and Saturday nights.

A Train Card does not restore a cancelled railway connection. For those weekends, settle the revised journey in Trenitalia before choosing a room or a pass duration. This notice does not establish replacement-bus frequency. For a normal-service date, finish the village sequence first, count its actual rail legs, then choose the ticket.
