Is Portofino worth a day trip or an overnight stay?
Choose a day trip if the harbour, San Giorgio viewpoint and Castello Brown are your main aims. Allow a half-day in the village, or a full day including the arrival, lunch and an unhurried return through Santa Margherita Ligure. These are suggested time allocations, not minimum visiting times.
An overnight in Portofino makes sense when an evening in the village is the point of the stay. It is less convenient for a rail-heavy holiday with a different destination each day: every departure starts with the last leg back to Santa Margherita. For most first visits, keep the room in a rail-linked town and visit Portofino without luggage.
Italia.it: Portofino’s harbour, church, castle and headland sightsGetting to Portofino by train and bus
Search trains to S. Margherita Ligure–Portofino. Despite the station name, it is in Santa Margherita Ligure. From the station, AMT line 782 runs to Portofino, with Paraggi on the route. Choose a train that leaves time for that onward bus rather than treating railway arrival as harbour arrival.
AMT’s specific single-ride line 782 ticket costs €5. Two separate single rides therefore cost €10 per person, before the railway fare. Validate the bus ticket and retain it for inspection. AMT lists purchase through its app, ticket offices, authorised sellers and machines. Do not apply the ordinary local-bus fare on the assumption that it covers a visitor’s Portofino ride.
The current winter 782 PDF is dated 14 September 2026 to 13 June 2027. Some extra runs marked with a dot apply only on Saturdays and holidays through 1 November 2026. Read the column for your date rather than carrying an apparent autumn frequency into winter. Allow a buffer between the return bus and a reserved onward train.
AMT: line 782 route, €5 single ticket and validation ruleArriving by boat: separate the route from the operating date
Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio line 1 links Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino and San Fruttuoso. It is a useful alternative arrival when the dated sailing and return work. The operator says tickets for this line are bought at the ticket office and warns of cancellations for sea conditions or low demand, with minimum passenger requirements.
Its linked 2026 timetable has an autumn section explicitly labelled October and 1 November. The general line page describes year-round service, but that does not supply a confirmed public sailing for a later November date. For travel after 1 November, build the Portofino visit around the verified bus link unless the operator supplies the applicable departure and return.
For a boat arrival, distinguish Portofino from San Fruttuoso. Continuing to the abbey is another excursion with its own return constraint, not a short walk around Portofino’s harbour. Do not rely on a last boat as the only way back to an important train.
Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio: line 1, ticket-office sales and operating conditionsWhat to see: harbour, San Giorgio, Castello Brown and the lighthouse
Start around the Piazzetta and harbour, then take the uphill route towards San Giorgio. Its churchyard gives a view over the village; this is a different visit from staying on the waterfront. Continue towards Castello Brown if you want the castle and garden, rather than assuming every elevated viewpoint is the same free-access site.
Castello Brown’s official site lists €10 for the park and castle, free for children under 12. Tickets are sold at the entrance; it says they cannot be reserved or bought online. Avoid paying an unofficial site for a supposed compulsory castle reservation.
The castle lists October hours of 10:00–18:00 and November–March hours of 10:00–16:00, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Make it an earlier part of a winter visit. The lighthouse at Punta del Capo is a further headland walk, not beside the bus stop. Add it only if your group wants more walking and has daylight and return time. The uphill sections are a reason to reduce the plan for limited mobility, not to describe the whole visit as a flat harbour stroll.
Castello Brown: official admission, ticket sales and seasonal hoursA workable Portofino day-trip plan
Morning: arrive at Santa Margherita Ligure station and take line 782 to Portofino, or use a confirmed morning boat from its actual boarding point. Spend the first block around the harbour and village lanes. Continue uphill to San Giorgio and Castello Brown before lunch if you want the paid visit; this also avoids leaving a winter castle visit until closing time.
Lunch: stay in Portofino if a harbour meal is part of the outing, or return to Santa Margherita for a later lunch and a waterfront afternoon. Read menus and any cover charge before sitting down; no current restaurant basket or booking availability is established here.
Afternoon: choose either the additional lighthouse walk or more time in Santa Margherita. Return with enough margin for the train. A boat to San Fruttuoso belongs in a different, transport-led version of the day; remove another activity rather than squeezing the abbey into the same short visit. For a half-day, stop after the harbour and one uphill sight.

| Your decision | Choose it for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Santa Margherita Ligure | The direct line 782 gateway and a rail-linked seaside base | Check the room’s walk from the station; the village visit still needs a last leg |
| Rapallo | A separate rail-linked town and line 1 boat origin | Portofino boat departures remain date- and weather-dependent |
| Genoa | City museums and evenings with one Portofino day trip | Adds the coastal railway journey before the onward bus or boat |
| Portofino itself | An evening or overnight specifically in the village | No railway station in the village; settle luggage transfer and property access |
When to go and what not to combine
For a harbour visit, the trip does not have to depend on swimming weather. Cooler months shorten daylight and castle hours, and make a bus-based arrival more useful than an assumed summer boat schedule. Summer allows more outdoor time but is not a reason to promise quick roads, empty boats or a quiet square.
Keep Portofino separate from a five-village Cinque Terre day. The two areas are different coastal trips; repeated station changes and a final Portofino connection leave little time at either. On a longer Liguria holiday, choose Santa Margherita for the Portofino portion and a closer Cinque Terre base for repeated village visits.
A car is unnecessary for the rail-and-bus outing here. If bringing one, arrange actual parking and the final approach before setting out rather than assuming the harbour is a convenient parking destination. Walking trails across the promontory require their own current status and difficulty assessment; this village guide is not an open-route certification.
