Lake Como ferries: routes, tickets and choosing the right boat

For Lake Como ferries, first choose between a passenger boat, a fast service and a central-lake vehicle ferry. Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio suit short cross-lake journeys; Como is a separate southern gateway. Buy for the actual ports and travel date, not for a vague all-lake route.

Which Lake Como boat do you need?

Navigazione Laghi operates the public lake network. Its Como page separates ordinary passenger ships, fast services and vehicle ferries. A private sightseeing cruise or taxi boat is a different purchase: do not assume a public ticket covers it, a guided commentary or villa admission.

For Varenna to Bellagio or Menaggio, start with the central-lake connections. For Como to the central lake, compare the ordinary and fast-service journeys for your date. A long ride along the western branch is not the same outing as crossing between towns near the middle. For Lecco, use the separate Bellagio–Lecco timetable rather than assuming every Como–Colico boat visits the eastern branch.

Read the timetable for your date and direction

The official page checked on 25 October 2026 lists Como timetables valid from 5 October to 1 November 2026. It links separate documents for Como–Colico ordinary and fast services, Bellagio–Lecco ships, and central-lake ferries. The ferry documents also separate weekdays from Sundays and holidays.

Do not extend these departure times past 1 November. For a later trip, use a newly valid document or a dated result from the operator’s journey search before committing to a boat-dependent arrival. An expired summer PDF still visible lower on the page is not a winter timetable.

Read from the actual origin port towards your destination, then read the reverse journey separately. Check that the chosen sailing calls at both ports, whether it needs a change, and any symbols or operating-day notes. A town appearing on the network map does not mean every boat stops there. Save a return option before leaving your base.

Single tickets, day passes and fast-service supplements

The passenger tariff linked by the operator is valid from 1 April 2026. Its ordinary full-fare single tickets are priced by numbered route stretches: €3 for stretch 1, €5.50 for stretch 3, €12 for stretch 6 and €14.50 for stretch 8. These are tariff-band examples, not a claim that your route belongs to one of those bands. The document also lists special minimum and urban fares, so €3 is not a universal minimum.

The matching full-adult one-day free-circulation prices for stretches 1, 3, 6 and 8 are €8, €17.50, €27 and €32. The pass covers unlimited trips within its named port limits, including intermediate stops, while valid. It is not automatically an all-lake pass. Fast services require the relevant supplement even with a free-circulation ticket; the tariff excludes night cruises unless otherwise indicated. Six-day products also exist.

For a simple out-and-back, compare the actual two single fares with the pass covering your ports. For several towns, compare every planned leg and verify that the pass boundary includes them. A circular ticket has different conditions: the tariff says it expires when you return to its starting port. Do not treat it as unlimited travel after returning to your base.

Buying and boarding without confusing the ports

Use the official search with the exact origin, destination, date and direction. If taking a car, select vehicle transport: the operator permits it only at stops marked Traghetto. Do not select a passenger landing simply because it has the same town name. For a foot-passenger journey, confirm the boarding point shown for that sailing.

Navigazione Laghi recommends reaching the ticket office about 20 minutes before departure and warns of queues in summer and on holidays. Add more time when a missed boat would affect a train or booked visit. The operator says tickets can be bought aboard without extra charge when there is no shore ticket-office service; this is not permission to skip a functioning ticket office without a surcharge. Disabled passengers may buy aboard without the extra charge.

Several vessels can be at a dock together. Follow the shore and onboard staff’s destination instructions rather than boarding whichever boat arrives first. Buying a ticket does not remove the need to identify the correct boat or allow time for a queue.

A workable central-lake day by public boat

A practical editorial sequence is Varenna in the morning, Bellagio for a walk and lunch, then a return to Varenna. Add Menaggio only when the day’s connections leave enough time for each stop. This is a route idea, not a promised circular departure or a minimum number of towns to visit.

If Villa Carlotta or Balbianello is the main reason for the outing, build the day around that visit instead. The Tremezzo/Villa Carlotta area and Lenno are separate stops; the central-lake vehicle-ferry circuit is not a door-to-door villa shuttle. A villa admission time does not include your public boat transfer, and Balbianello’s local taxi boat is a separate service.

For a rail return, leave time between landing in Varenna and boarding at Varenna Esino. Choose a boat earlier than your last possible connection. From Bellagio or Menaggio, the final train is not your only deadline: first you must get back to the rail shore.

Cars, luggage and access needs

Use the vehicle-ferry search and separate vehicle tariff if your car must cross. A passenger fare does not establish the vehicle charge or available vehicle space. For a stay on one shore, compare leaving the car parked and travelling as a foot passenger instead of carrying it on every outing.

The published passenger conditions allow one free hand-luggage item within their size and volume limits; extra or oversized pieces can attract charges. Do not assume a large suitcase is included merely because you are a foot passenger. Keep enough control of your bags to board, transfer and disembark.

If you need step-free boarding, wheelchair space or help with a pushchair, establish the suitability of the specific port and sailing with Navigazione Laghi before purchase. A discounted fare or a town-level accessibility label does not certify the complete journey. The general Como page provides service information at +39 031 579211.

Weather and the return journey

The operator warns that bad weather or strong wave motion can suspend routes. Keep a local plan on your own shore if conditions make crossing uncertain. For a non-refundable onward flight or intercity train, avoid making the last boat the only way to reach the departure station.

Use the ticket office for same-day updates; Navigazione Laghi lists 800-551801 for calls within Italy. For future November or winter journeys, the missing later-valid timetable is a planning limit, not proof that all boats stop operating. This guide deliberately gives no departure times beyond the verified document’s end date.
