The five-day Umbria road trip at a glance
Use Orvieto for the first two nights and Assisi for the next two. Drive Orvieto–Todi–Assisi on day three, keep day four for Assisi, then visit Perugia before returning to Orvieto on day five. This makes a loop with one hotel change and avoids trying to see four hill towns in a day. The five days and four nights are an editorial itinerary, not an operator package.
The central loop is roughly 200 km before local hotel and parking journeys. Modelled town-to-town legs are about 40 km from Orvieto to Todi, 55–60 km from Todi to Assisi, 20–25 km from Assisi to Perugia and 75–80 km from Perugia to Orvieto. These rounded OpenStreetMap/OSRM routing estimates are orientation, not live traffic, closure clearance or permission to drive into historic centres. Use the named visitor car parks as your actual destinations.
Choose this plan for a mix of cathedral art, town walks and a Todi stop. If your only interests are Perugia and Assisi, the car-free regional plan is simpler. If you want rural accommodation and winery visits, extend the trip rather than inserting them between every major town.
Umbria Tourism: Todi’s squares and churchesDay 1: arrive in Orvieto and keep the afternoon local
Arrive, leave bags and walk the upper town from Corso Cavour to Piazza della Repubblica, with Piazza del Popolo on the way back. If you arrive early enough and the cathedral’s actual visiting window suits, make the Duomo your main paid visit today. If arrival is late, leave it for day two rather than driving onward to another town. Sleep in Orvieto.
For a hilltop hotel, choose Via Roma or Campo della Fiera according to its address, or follow the property’s lawful unloading instructions. Piazza della Pace below the cliff is another option, but it adds the station-to-centre transfer. Busitalia still posts a funicular suspension with replacement buses on 26 October 2026; do not promise a working funicular as part of the arrival.
Busitalia: Orvieto funicular suspension and replacement busDay 2: Orvieto’s cathedral and one underground visit
Keep the car parked. Give the cathedral and San Brizio Chapel a proper visiting block, then choose St Patrick’s Well or an independently booked cave tour. The cathedral ticket’s underground rooms do not make every cave attraction part of the same admission. Use the rest of the afternoon for the western streets around San Giovenale or an archaeological collection. Sleep in Orvieto again.
In November–February the ordinary cathedral closing time is 17:00, and the Sunday afternoon window ends at 16:30. The well also has a shorter winter day. Put the paid interiors before a long lunch if you are likely to run short of daylight. A second Orvieto night gives you this flexibility without handling luggage twice.
Opera del Duomo: opening hours and admission productsDay 3: Orvieto to Todi, then Assisi
Drive to Todi in the morning and allow about an hour for the first road leg, plus parking and the ascent into town. Porta Orvietana, on Viale di Montesanto, is a named visitor car park; the municipality describes lift and walking access towards the centre through the Giardini Oberdan. This is more useful than navigating directly to Piazza del Popolo.
Give Todi a half-day: Piazza del Popolo and its cathedral, the climb towards San Fortunato, and lunch. Add Santa Maria della Consolazione if it fits your chosen parking approach, rather than criss-crossing town with the car. The exact interiors you enter depend on the day’s access; the walking sequence itself does not require you to buy a package.
Continue to Assisi in the afternoon. Allow roughly another hour on the road, followed by parking, check-in and an uphill walk if needed. Do not put a fixed-entry Assisi booking immediately after a long Todi lunch. Sleep in Assisi, with the next full day protected for the town.
Comune di Todi: Porta Orvietana car park and lift accessDay 4: a full Assisi day without another transfer
Visit the Basilica of Saint Francis during its tourist-access periods, then walk up through the centre towards Piazza del Comune and the cathedral of San Rufino. Choose Santa Chiara as another church stop if the day’s opening and service schedule allows. Keep Santa Maria degli Angeli in the lower town as an optional separate visit, not a compulsory stop between every upper-town church. Sleep in Assisi again.
On 27 October 2026 the basilica’s official notice says the Lower Church closes at noon and the Upper Church is only partially accessible. If that date falls on your Assisi day, rearrange the order or dates; arriving for an ordinary afternoon visit will not solve the restriction. The road trip’s night allocation is flexible and is not a guarantee of access to every church.
Basilica of Saint Francis: current noticesDay 5: Perugia, then close the loop in Orvieto
Leave Assisi for Perugia in the morning. The short road leg is roughly half an hour before parking; allow more for hotel departure and traffic. Use the Pian di Massiano interchange and Minimetrò towards Pincetto rather than assuming central streets provide easy visitor parking. Walk Corso Vannucci to Piazza IV Novembre, then choose the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria as the day’s main interior or spend the time on Rocca Paolina and the surrounding streets.
Allow about an hour and a half for the Perugia–Orvieto road stage as a planning buffer, with extra time to collect bags or return the vehicle. Do not pair a long museum afternoon with a tightly timed flight from a distant airport. If the departure deadline is fixed, shorten Perugia or add a fifth night.
Minimetrò’s published ordinary service ends at 21:05 on weekdays and 20:45 on Sundays; the Saturday extension runs until 01:05 through 26 December 2026. A late dinner requires a deliberate return plan, not an assumption that the line runs all night.

| Your decision | Road allowance before parking | Where to aim first |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1: Orvieto arrival | Depends on your point of origin; no regional sightseeing detour assumed | Via Roma or Campo della Fiera for a hilltop stay; Piazza della Pace for the lower interchange |
| Day 2: Orvieto | No inter-town driving | Leave the car parked and visit on foot |
| Day 3: Orvieto–Todi–Assisi | About 95–100 km total; allow about two hours driving plus the Todi visit | Porta Orvietana in Todi; then the Assisi property’s lawful parking approach |
| Day 4: Assisi | No inter-town driving required | Keep your existing space; a lower-town visit adds a local journey |
| Day 5: Assisi–Perugia–Orvieto | About 100 km; protect a Perugia visiting block and a return buffer | Pian di Massiano for Perugia, then your agreed Orvieto return point |
Car hire, restricted streets and the cost basket
Check the actual collection and return office before committing to an Orvieto loop. This itinerary is not evidence that a particular rental desk exists beside the station, opens on Sunday or accepts an out-of-hours return. If your rental begins at an airport, add that separate journey and enough time for the handover.
A hotel within a historic centre does not grant general ZTL access. Ask for its named approach, any plate-registration requirement and the permitted unloading procedure; otherwise leave the vehicle in visitor parking. In Assisi, choose accommodation with an explicit parking arrangement if you want to avoid repeated luggage walks. A rural room makes sense when you want countryside time, but it removes the convenience of walking home after dinner.
Budget separately for four accommodation nights, the exact hire period and cover, fuel for roughly 200 km plus local journeys, any tolls on your chosen approach, parking, meals and the attractions you actually enter. The Orvieto Duomo’s standard product is €8; €11 adds the Faina Museum. Do not buy a larger admission basket merely because it covers sites the itinerary cannot fit. Room rates, rental quotes and parking entitlements remain trip-specific rather than an invented daily total.
Live Orvieto: station, visitor parking and centre accessIf you have fewer days or want more countryside
With three days, keep two nights in Orvieto and use Todi as the separate excursion; leave Assisi and Perugia for another trip. That western version has less driving and a different scope, rather than compressing the whole five-day loop. With six or seven days, add nights before adding distant destinations. An extra Assisi-area day can take in Spello; a countryside stay can justify a separately booked winery visit with a non-drinking driver or other transport.
In winter, keep the Todi transfer and car-park approaches in daylight when practical. In hot weather, put the steeper town walks earlier and use a slower lunch or interior visit through the hottest part of the day. These pacing choices are editorial recommendations, not forecasts or assurances that every attraction is open.
