Campania travel guide: Naples, the coast, islands and inland stops

Choose Naples for city sights and rail outings, Sorrento for peninsula connections, Amalfi for coast time, and Salerno for an eastern gateway. Add Caserta or Paestum without trying to cover the region in one day.

Choose a Campania trip around two areas, not every famous stop

For a first week in Campania, combine Naples with either Sorrento or an Amalfi Coast town. Give Naples its own sightseeing time, choose Pompeii or Herculaneum for an archaeological outing, and keep Capri as an optional sea day. If Greek temples or the Cilento coast are the priority, shift the second part towards Salerno and Paestum rather than crossing the Sorrento peninsula repeatedly. Campania also includes Caserta to the north and the inland provinces of Benevento and Avellino. A regional guide should help you choose among these different trips, not treat Naples, Capri, Pompeii and Positano as one excursion. The night allocations below are editorial pacing suggestions, not minimum stays or packaged departures.

Naples: give the city at least two full sightseeing days

Choose Naples for the historic-centre lanes around Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali, churches and museums, and the waterfront and royal-city area. MANN makes a useful companion to a Pompeii or Herculaneum visit, but the museum’s current room openings matter if a particular collection is your reason for going. Three nights works for an arrival evening and two city days. Add another night if you want a full archaeological day without cutting the city visit. A station-area room suits repeated rail journeys; a historic-centre room suits evenings on foot. Neither is automatically the right choice for an early Capri boat from Beverello.

Pompeii or Herculaneum: choose the visit before the train

Pompeii suits travellers wanting a much larger ancient-city visit and willing to spend longer walking outdoors. Herculaneum suits a more compact archaeological outing with preserved buildings and interiors. They are distinct visits, not interchangeable train stops. Give Pompeii a dedicated day if ruins are a priority; choose Herculaneum when a shorter site visit better fits the trip. For the usual EAV arrival at Pompeii, the stop is Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, not the separate mainline Pompei station. For Herculaneum, Ercolano Scavi still leaves a walk to the site. Avoid adding Vesuvius on the assumption that a park ticket or EAV ticket includes a volcano transfer or crater admission.

Sorrento: a peninsula base, not an Amalfi Coast town

Sorrento works for a stay combining town time with rail trips along the Vesuvian corridor and boats to Capri when services operate. The station is in the upper town and passenger ferries use Marina Piccola. Marina Grande is a different waterfront area. Choose a property by the journeys you repeat rather than just its sea view. Three or four nights allows a local day and one or two independent outings. Sorrento is not a quick rail base for every Amalfi Coast village: there is no railway onward to Positano or Amalfi, so that part needs a road or sea journey. If evenings in Amalfi or Positano matter, compare actually staying on the coast.

Amalfi Coast: Amalfi, Positano, Ravello or the eastern towns

Choose Amalfi for a central coast stay with waterfront connections; Positano for time in Positano itself, accepting a steep property approach; Ravello for its hilltop setting and villas, with a final road journey rather than a ferry arrival at the centre. Minori and Maiori suit a stay focused on the eastern coast and waterfront time. A full coast week need not include another island or a hotel change. Use separate days for Amalfi and Atrani, Ravello, Positano, and Minori or Maiori, keeping one day flexible. For a short visit, choose two or three of those rather than attempting the complete coast between a late-morning arrival and an evening train.

Capri, Ischia or Procida: decide what the island adds

Capri suits a visit built around Capri town, Anacapri, the Faraglioni or a boat circuit. A Blue Grotto visit is optional and depends on conditions; it should not be the only reason a tightly timed day works. An overnight stay adds an evening ashore, but also makes the next mainland commitment dependent on sea transport. Ischia is a different choice for a longer island stay with thermal-garden interests and multiple towns. Procida suits a smaller-island visit centred on its harbour settlements. Do not assume one ticket or a circular ferry timetable connects all three islands conveniently. Pick the island first, then qualify that actual outward and return service; a three-island checklist is not a useful first-week default.

Caserta: a palace-and-park day north of Naples

Choose the Royal Palace of Caserta if apartments, formal gardens and a substantial park visit appeal more than another coast journey. The palace’s official directions place Caserta station opposite the complex: exit towards Piazza Carlo di Borbone and cross the square. This is an independently useful rail outing rather than a reason to hire a car. Plan around the usual Tuesday closure. The October 2026 schedule keeps the apartments open later than the park and English Garden; a late-afternoon apartment ticket is not enough time for the whole complex. Allocate the main sightseeing day to Caserta instead of trying to combine its full park with Pompeii.

Paestum and Cilento: a different southern extension

Paestum’s Greek temples and archaeological museum answer a different interest from the buried Roman towns near Naples. The temples and the Tomb of the Diver collection are reasons to give the site meaningful time. Choose it as an outing from an eastern stay or as part of a longer Cilento extension, not an add-on after a full Positano day. For a coast holiday farther south, compare the actual Cilento town and accommodation access separately. A railway station serving the wider area does not put every beach property within walking distance. This guide does not claim a current Paestum admission price, guaranteed gallery display or through-service to every Cilento village.

Benevento and Irpinia: when inland Campania is the point

Benevento suits a city visit built around the Arch of Trajan, Santa Sofia and the Sannio Museum rather than another sea day. Avellino and Irpinia suit a more dispersed trip involving inland towns, landscape and food or wine interests. They are alternatives to a coast-heavy itinerary, not nearby substitutes if a Capri boat is cancelled. Decide which inland town or booked activity matters before choosing a base. Regional rail and local buses do not automatically solve the final village or winery journey; a car or arranged driver may fit those particular days. Do not hire one merely because a regional map makes every stop appear close.

Two workable first-week shapes

For seven days and six nights, use three nights in Naples followed by three in Sorrento. Day one is arrival; days two and three are Naples; day four transfers to Sorrento; day five is Pompeii or Herculaneum; day six is a Capri outing if conditions and services suit; day seven is departure. Keep a local Sorrento day available if the island outing cannot run. For a coast-led version, use two nights in Naples and four in Amalfi: arrival, one full Naples day, transfer, then separate Amalfi/Atrani, Ravello and Positano days before departure. This deliberately omits Pompeii and Capri. Add nights if all those places are essential, rather than removing the transfer margin or calling travel days full sightseeing days.

Arrival and current transport constraints

For a mainland rail arrival from Rome, choose Napoli Centrale for Naples or the EAV connection towards Sorrento; compare Salerno for an eastern Amalfi Coast arrival. Napoli Afragola is not the same station as Centrale. A coast hotel still needs a bus, boat or road transfer after the mainline train. EAV has announced a Vesuvian-line strike on 30 October 2026, with guaranteed service windows 05:30–08:30 and 16:30–19:30 and named last and first guaranteed departures. That notice affects planning for the Naples–Sorrento corridor; it does not certify other operators. For sea travel, choose the dated seasonal panel and retain a local alternative. At Caserta, consult the monthly park and garden hours as well as the apartments’ closing time.

Costs: build the basket from your actual itinerary

Separate accommodation, mainline rail, local transport, admission and food. A mainland rail fare does not include EAV, a coast boat or Capri attractions unless the particular product explicitly says so. Compare paid visits individually before buying a pass, especially when a named collection or garden is a priority. The largest avoidable mismatch is often logistical: a cheaper remote room can add repeated transfers, while a sea-view address can still leave stairs between the quay and entrance. Obtain live room and transport quotes for your dates. There is no single verified daily budget that covers a Naples city break, a private Capri charter and a Cilento road trip.
